Religious leaders unite to address global warming Interfaith declaration calls on U.S. government's 'moral responsibility'
By Phina Borgeson
[Episcopal News Service] Uniting through a common concern for creation, Muslim, Christian and Jewish religious leaders announced May 21 a pact to fight global warming in a statement delivered to the White House and Congress.
"An Interfaith Declaration on the Moral Responsibility of the U.S. Government to Address Global Warming" comes on the heels of the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change's most recent report that makes clear the serious risks of delay.
The religious leaders, including Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, declare acceptance of the scientific evidence for global warming and pledge mutual support in addressing this severe challenge.

Episcopal immigration advocates meet, call for broader commitments
[Episcopal News Service] A group of Episcopalians -- both lay and clergy -- recently called on the Episcopal Church to undertake more vigorous and church-wide advocacy on behalf of at-risk migrants.
The group, convened by Episcopal Migration Ministries (EMM), met May 14-15 at St. Paul's Cathedral Center in Los Angeles to discuss the current crisis facing undocumented immigrants as raids by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) escalate in various parts of the country.
Joining the group were Richard Parkins, EMM director, the Rev. John Denaro, EMM's church relations and outreach officer, and the Rev. Anthony Guillén, missioner for Latino/Hispanic Ministries for the Episcopal Church. The meeting was hosted by the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles.

Griswold, McAlpen, Swing, Vergara receive honorary degrees from CDSP
By Mary Frances Schjonberg
[Episcopal News Service] Former Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold told the members of the 2007 graduating class of the Church Divinity School of the Pacific (CDSP) May 18 to allow their baptismal call to guide their ministry.
"In this present season in the life of the Church a deep and disciplined and prayerful appropriation of our baptismal identity is essential if our various ministries are to be revelatory for Christ's own ministry" of reconciliation, Griswold said during his sermon for the Episcopal seminary's graduation Eucharist.
Griswold; Canon Holly McAlpen, missioner of the Episcopal Diocese of California; recently retired California Bishop William Swing and the Rev. Dr. Winfred Bagao Vergara, the Episcopal Church's director of ethnic congregational development and Asian American missioner, all received honorary degrees May 18 from CDSP, the Episcopal seminary in Berkeley, California.

Great Idea: Reel conversation
[Episcopal Life] Movie buff and Episcopal priest John Lane in Staunton, Virginia, loves a fire-y discussion, and he's found a way to spark more of them at his local movie theater.
Every Tuesday night (a slow night for most cinemas), Lane stays after the 7 o'clock showing to lead a discussion of the film. In the first month of his new ministry, he enticed moviegoers to stick around after showings of Jesus Camp, Babel, The Queen, Volver and Notes on a Scandal. He's convinced this spiritual exercise could catch on and challenges his fellow Episcopalians to make the offer to their local theaters.
