Historic Japanese-American parish marks centennial 'Bringing Forth the Next Generation' is focus at L.A.'s St. Mary's Church

By Pat McCaughan

[Episcopal News Service] St. Mary's Episcopal Church (http://www.stmarys-la.org/home.html) may be the only church in Los Angeles or the nation to include a likeness of Snoopy, cartoonist Charles Schulz's light-hearted beagle, in a stained glass window.

The South Mariposa Avenue church's dazzling chapel windows also blend beloved Scripture stories with memorials to the Issei, the Japanese immigrants to the United States, and its Nisei members, second generation Japanese Americans, many of whom were exiled to World War II camps (http://www.jacl.org/education_history.php), one at nearby Santa Anita racetrack where whole families were made to live in individual horse stables.

St. Mary's rich past was retold via its windows and in music, dance and word as the historically Japanese American congregation marked its centennial anniversary on Pentecost, May 27.

OPINION

Tolerance is not my word

By Kelly Lowe

[Episcopal Life] The past two weeks during our Education for Ministry (EFM) class, our lessons for the week and occurrences in the church and our community led us into a discussion of bigotry, its causes and roots. As we talked about such feelings and the problems in the Communion, I looked down at a trivet on our conference table and saw this: "Episcopalians embrace love, inclusion, tolerance and respect for everyone."

Do we? This word, tolerance, has been a thorn in my side. When I read this to the class and stated my dislike of the word tolerance, the reactions from my classmates were almost unilaterally negative. No one had a good feeling about the word.

I had the blessing to come into the church at All Saints, Indianapolis, a parish that is very open and affirming, where gay and straight could just as easily describe the weather or the way a road runs as a person's orientation; a parish where black and white more often describes the victory flag for the "500." I was fortunate to have a community teach me compassion and understanding for everyone.

Film examines Amish, others in forgiveness

By Mary Warner

[Religion News Service] Filmmaker Martin Doblmeier, who set out to explore the nature of forgiveness, was almost finished when the news broke about the Amish school shooting in West Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania, last October.

So he went to Lancaster County to film a segment on what happened after a gunman invaded the school and killed five girls and then himself. What he found was an Amish delegation that went to the gunman's widow to show support and forgiveness.

"We were convinced we could not make the film without the Amish," Doblmeier said recently.
