ONE Vote launched to make global poverty issues key to presidential race 'Preach the Gospel every day; if necessary use words'

By Matthew Davies

[Episcopal News Service] The ONE Campaign's commitment to make poverty history was stepped up June 11 when a mass media and mobilization effort to make global poverty a fundamental aspect of the 2008 presidential race was launched at St. Mark's Episcopal Church on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

The new initiative, "ONE Vote '08: Saving Lives, Securing our Future," promises to energize presidential candidates and ONE members "to make the fight against global poverty a key foreign policy and security issue at the 2008 ballot box."

Former Senators Tom Daschle (D-South Dakota) and Bill Frist (R-Tennessee), co-chairs of ONE Vote, addressed a standing-room-only crowd at a news conference that marked the launch, while inbound and outbound satellite links connected a network of supporters nationwide.

Executive Council prepares for communiqué response

Two committees hear experience of gay Nigerian activist

By Mary Frances Schjonberg

[Episcopal News Service] The Executive Council, the Episcopal Church's governing body between General Conventions, began its four-day meeting June 11 in New Jersey learning that a draft of a response to the Anglican Communion Primates' latest communiqué was ready for their consideration.

In a public plenary session, House of Deputies President Bonnie Anderson said that Executive Council members would discuss during private conversation later in the day a draft report of the EC008 Task Group, requested by the Executive Council (via Resolution EC008) (http://www.episcopalchurch.org/79901_84765_ENG_HTM.htm) during its March 2-4 meeting in Portland, Oregon. (Council normally spends some time during each meeting in such private conversation.)

The EC008 Task Group document suggesting a Council response to the communiqué (http://www.episcopalchurch.org/3577_82571_ENG_HTM.htm) issued by Primates of the Anglican Communion at the end of their February meeting in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania will be discussed during an open plenary session on June 14.

California congregation shelters mother facing deportation New Sanctuary Movement challenges lawmakers

By Pat McCaughan

[Episcopal News Service] One day after Congress scuttled immigration reform, an Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles congregation welcomed into sanctuary a nursing mother facing deportation.

On June 8, Liliana Sanctuario, 28, and her two-month-old son, Pablo, began living at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Long Beach, California, to avoid federal deportation to Mexico, and to help raise public awareness about the need for effective immigration reform, according to the Rev. Julie Wakelee-Lynch.

"This is not hiding, this is public hospitality," said Wakelee-Lynch, St. Luke's associate rector. "Her three children and her husband are U.S. citizens, all are legal residents, which is why deportation won't work for Liliana," whose actual last name was withheld for her protection.
