Brazil plane crash victims mourned in cathedral service, Primates' prayers Incident occurred days after church leaders welcomed Presiding Bishop
By Bob Williams
[Episcopal News Service] The Sao Paulo cathedral of the Episcopal-Anglican Church of Brazil was the site for a July 18 prayer service remembering the nearly 200 people who died July 17 when a TAM jet crashed at the city's main airport.
"We are now in a moment of extremely pain, a moment of sadness," said Primate Bishop Mauricio Andrade of the Igreja Episcopal Anglicana do Brasil in a July 18 statement (full text below). "Brazil is crying because the accident of ... flight number 3054."
Andrade, who is also diocesan bishop in Brasilia, had on July 6 welcomed to Brazil Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori for a five-day visit with church leaders. The delegation entered the country at the Sao Paulo airport.
"Our prayers are with all who have been so deeply affected by this tragedy," Jefferts Schori said in a July 19 statement from Bogota where she is visiting the Episcopal Church's Diocese of Colombia. "We are all reminded that life is infinitely precious and unpredictable. May those who mourn be comforted and may those who died rest in the peace that passes understanding."

Ecuador dioceses welcome Presiding Bishop
Jefferts Schori continues on July 18 to Colombia
[Episcopal News Service] The Episcopal Church's two dioceses in Ecuador -- the Guayaquil-based Litoral Diocese, and the Quito-based Central Ecuador diocese-- warmly welcomed Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori July 12-18 for visits to congregations, schools and other ministries.
More than 600 people participated in a July 15 Eucharist in Central Ecuador, said its bishop, Wilfrido Ramos-Orench. The liturgy was followed by a festive celebration with local food, live music and folk dances.
The Quito-based Diocese of Central Ecuador is also the site for the February 2008 meeting of the Episcopal Church's Executive Council.
In Guayaquil, Bishop Algredo Morante-Espana led church members in welcoming Jefferts Schori to their congregations and diocese.

FEATURES
From faucet to fund raiser
[Episcopal Life] A full page ad in The New York Times food section in March prompted the great idea this month. The ad read:
March 22nd Special of the Day N.Y. Tap Water ... $1 Served chilled, and with good karma
The ad listed 300 restaurants all over the city. At the bottom of the page was this: "Tomorrow, visit one of the many participating New York City Tap Project Restaurants and pay $1 for tap water. All proceeds will be donated to UNICEF to provide clean drinking water to millions of children around the world."
That great fund-raising idea easily could be used in communities across the United States. Organized by Episcopalians in each locale, the dollars raised might fund vastly expanded efforts by Episcopal Relief and Development. ERD's Clean Water Fund provides wells and clean water to thousands of children in Haiti, in six villages in Angola, in Ghana (pictured here) and elsewhere around the world. To learn more, e-mail Abagail Nelson, ERD vice president for programs, or call the Clean Water Fund at 800-334-7626, ext. 5129.
