A Great Stride Forward for NIFCON
The Anglican Communion Network for Inter Faith Concerns is delighted to have at last been able to achieve one of the main tasks it was mandated to by the last Lambeth Conference. With the launch of its new website earlier this year (within the Anglican Communion web portal) it now has a way to make available a Christian Muslim Digest. This is a regular summary of items in the English (though not exclusively) speaking media involving Christian Muslim relations. The first issue had an emphasis on Egypt, the latest is more general. Future issues will alternate between a particular geographical area, or issue related, focus and a broader round up.
The aim is to give a more global picture, to show how events in one country or province can affect relations elsewhere and to indicate how the media itself can influence relations between the faiths particularly if something which is ethnic or political in origin is labelled as being faith based. The project has long been a vision of NIFCON and many attempts have been made in the past to secure funding. NIFCON is grateful to have received contributions from the Archbishop of Canterbury's Fund and The Faith Communities Capacity Building Fund. This has enabled them to engage a researcher to prepare each issue.
The Digest will appear on a quarterly basis with six to eight issues being available before Lambeth 2008. The Revd Dr David Thomas, a founding member of NIFCON and one of the project's co-ordinators said "I am delighted to see a vision come to fruition. The Digest is a significant part of the contribution that NIFCON will make to the forthcoming Lambeth Conference." The Digest can be found at http://nifcon.anglicancommunion.org/digest/
