ERD reaches out to those affected by Hurricane Dean
[ERD] In the wake of Dean, a Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds at about 150 miles per hour, Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) has contacted partners in Jamaica, Belize, Haiti and the Dominican Republic and other parts of the region. The major storm has caused flooding, mudslides, heavy rain, high winds and severe damage, killing at least nine people.
The center of Dean swept south of Jamaica on August 19, cutting power lines, ripping off roofs and flooding streets, according to reports.
The National Hurricane Center has forecast that Dean could become a Category 5 hurricane as it moves toward the Cayman Islands and approaches Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula later on August 20.
ERD will assist people impacted by Hurricane Dean as church partners identify and assess needs locally.

In Peru, ERD provides support after earthquake
[ERD] Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) is providing emergency assistance to people in Peru after the country was rocked by a violent earthquake on August 15.
A deadly 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck Peru causing extensive damage throughout the Ica Province, located along the southern coast. The quake killed more than 540 people and at least 1,500 people were injured.
Among the dead are 150 people who were killed when the roof of San Clemente Roman Catholic Church collapsed during a funeral service in the city of Pisco. According to recent reports, more than 16,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed and roughly 80,000 people have been affected by the earthquake.
ERD is working with the Anglican Diocese of Peru to provide food, blankets, shelter support and medicine for people left homeless by the quake. Eighty percent of housing has been destroyed in Pisco, near the epicenter of the earthquake. The Diocese of Peru is deeply involved in the relief and rescue efforts by providing critical supplies and helping displaced people who have been injured and brought to Lima.

FEATURES
Church Center Scholarship Committee offers 45 awards for 2007-8 academic year
By Emily Conboy
[Episcopal News Service] The Episcopal Church Center Scholarship Committee awarded 45 individuals partial scholarships for the upcoming academic year. A total of $197,451.60 went to recipients from dioceses across the country from trusts administered by staff at the Episcopal Church Center. Colleges of Theology and Nursing at Cuttington University in Liberia also received grants.
The scholarship committee, which meets twice a year to review applications and approve scholarships, announced the latest awards in June. The amounts available each year derive from annual income of a number of trust funds.
The awards are given to individuals in accordance with the criteria for each trust fund and after a thorough review of financial needs. Due to limited funds and the increasing number of requests, awards are capped at 80 percent of the asking. Application deadlines are May 30 for the fall semester (or the next academic year) and November 1 for the spring semester. A few scholarship applications for summer courses are considered in May.
