Presbytery and synod news

by Jerry Van Marter Presbyterian News Service

TACOMA, WA - The Synod of Alaska-Northwest has awarded a $600 Synod Peacemaking Grant to First Cambodian Presbyterian Ministry in Olympia Presbytery. The funds will be used for the Cambodian ministry's Gangs Prevention for Children and Youth program. Half of the award will purchase Khmer-language resources for classes and the other half will go toward recruitment and gas expenses for volunteer teachers in the program, according to the ministry's pastor, the Rev. Sahara V. Chea.

DES MOINES, IA - Des Moines Presbytery will sponsor a "Healthy Congregations Workshop" Oct. 26-27 at Ankeny (IA) Presbyterian Church.

The workshop will train leaders how to be positive influences on their congregations by applying family systems theory to the life of the church. The workshop will be led by Lola Peters, an expert in the family systems methodology and a member of the Ankeny church.

BELLINGHAM, WA - Thanks have been conveyed to the children of St. James Presbyterian Church here for their gifts of school kits for Iraqi refugee kids in Syria and Lebanon.

Working in partnership with PC(USA) missionary Nuhad Tomeh and the Middle East Council of Churches, the kids of St. James, a church in North Puget Sound Presbytery, "filled a big need," Tomeh said. The presbytery also took an offering totaling $2,000 to support the school supplies effort earlier this year.

MINNEAPOLIS - A community peacemaking event, co-sponsored by the Presbytery of the Twin Cities Area, will take place Sept. 30 at the Presbyterian Church of the Apostles in Burnsville, MN.

The event will feature worship, music, speakers, exhibits, a book fair and a number of peacemaking-related workshops. There will also be activities for children and youth. Kenote speaker is the Rev. Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer, a renowned author and teacher. He will be speaking on "Choosing a Visionary Path to Peace," in which he will address political, economic, faith and foreign policy decisions that affect hunger and poverty in the global community.

SEATTLE - In response to his questions about the Capitol Hill block party near downtown Seattle, held on the last Saturday in July, one participant explained: "The music is awesome and the Presbyterians are handing out free water!"

Cristie Kearny of Capitol Hill Presbyterian New Church Development of Seattle Presbytery, has had a heart for the people of Capitol Hill for a long time, and that, combined with a generous measure of creativity has led to the second year of the presence of the "Oasis" at the Capitol Hill block party.

The huge event includes a variety of live hard rock, rap and hip-hop music, a very large beer garden, dozens of vendors and street artists, and a throng of hot, sweaty, thirsty people. Capitol Hill NCD's "Oasis" is one of the most popular and evangelistic spots at the party.

LANCASTER, PA - One church in Donegal Presbytery isn't taking a back seat on the issue of world hunger. In June, two carloads of men, women and children from First Presbyterian Church of York, PA, traveled to Washington to lobby Congress on the pending Farm Bill.

They were part of a crowd of more than 400 attending Bread for the World's conference, "Sowing Seeds: a Growing Movement," designed to enlist U.S. citizens in the effort to end hunger in the world.

SPOKANE, WA - The Presbytery of the Inland Northwest's Camp Spalding celebrated its 50th anniversary this summer with record attendance of more than 1,560.

Over the years, the camp has expanded several times and added Clearwater Lodge, a modern conference and retreat facility. Programs this fall and winter include retreats for men, women, youth and students of the Bible.
