NCC names ELCA pastor director for women's ministry

by John R. Brooks, ELCA News Service

The National Council of Churches USA (NCC) named the Rev. Ann M. Tiemeyer, community organizer and pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), to the post of program director for women's ministry. She is currently director of Koinonia NYC, an urban ministry in New York. Tiemeyer will be based at the NCC office in New York and will begin her new role Oct. 1.

As program director she will seek "to champion the spiritual and professional development of women in positions of leadership and responsibility in the NCC and its member churches," according to an NCC news release. She will also develop programs and experiences that will encourage women to become involved in the ecumenical movement, especially young women, the release said.

As director of Koinonia since 2002, Tiemeyer developed community based programs to respond to the effects of the terror attacks of September 11, 2001. The programs include a day camp with a mental health component, faith walks at Ground Zero and servant events in New York. Tiemeyer was chair of the former ELCA Commission for Women steering committee. She has served as pastor of ELCA congregations in Woodside, N.Y., Van Nuys, Calif., and Fairview, N.J. Tiemeyer is a graduate of Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio, one of 28 ELCA colleges and universities. She earned a master of divinity degree from Yale Divinity School, New Haven, Conn.
