Madeleine L'Engle, writer and Episcopalian, dies at 88

[Episcopal News Service] Madeleine L'Engle, a lay Episcopalian who wrote more than 60 books ranging from children's stories to theological reflection, died September 6 in Litchfield, Connecticut. She was 88.

Her death, of natural causes in a nursing home, was announced September 7 by her publisher, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, according to the Associated Press.

L'Engle was best known for her children's classic, "A Wrinkle in Time," which won the John Newbery Award as the best children's book of 1963. By 2004, it had sold more than 6 million copies, was in its 67th printing and was still selling 15,000 copies a year, the New York Times reported.

She had been the writer-in-residence and librarian at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City.

International acclaimed choir Gloriae Dei Cantores will perform in four U.S. cities

[Episcopal Life] Gloriae Dei Cantores, an internationally acclaimed choir from Massachusetts whose members dedicate themselves to preserving and authentically interpreting great choral music since the 11th century, will tour in September, giving performances in Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina and Georgia.

When in residence, the 40-voice choir sings Choral Evensong and Sunday Eucharist at the Church of the Transfiguration in Orleans, Massachusetts, where it also presents an annual series of choral masterworks. The church is located at the Community of Jesus, an ecumenical abbey in the Benedictine tradition on the shores of Cape Cod Bay.

The choir will perform on September 21 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Lynchburg, Virginia; September 25 at First United Methodist church in Morristown, Tennessee; September 27 at the Basilica of St. Lawrence in Asheville, North Carolina; and September 30 at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. Philip in Atlanta, Georgia. All concerts begin at 7:30 p.m., preceded by a lecture one hour earlier. On September 22 at 10 a.m., St. John's Episcopal Church in Lynchburg will be the site of a Gregorian Chant workshop.
