Interfaith Religious Leaders Call America to fast to end the war
Washington, D.C.--Leaders from several different religious traditions will stand in the shadow of the U.S. Capitol to announce the call for an interfaith fast to end the war. The event is being coordinated by the Rev. Dr. Shanta Premawardhana, associate general secretary for Interfaith Relations, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA (NCC).
Jewish, Muslim, Roman Catholic, Protestant and Unitarian leaders will hear the traditional blowing of the Jewish shofar, an Imam calling the world to prayer, the tolling of a bell, and the imposition of ashes on leaders' foreheads as they report the organizing of an Oct. 8 interfaith fast. The leaders will announce that several fast events have already been registered at www.interfaithfast.org as well as a unique organizing effort on Facebook.
The news conference will be held Wednesday, Sept. 26, 11amEDT in front of 100 Maryland Ave., NE, Washington, D.C.
Those scheduled to speak are: Rabbi Arthur Waskow, Shalom Center, Philadelphia; Dr. Sayyid M. Syeed, Islamic Society of North America; Sister Marge Clark, BVM, Pax Christi USA and NETWORK, the women religious-led Roman Catholic Social Justice group; the Rev. Stan Hastey, Alliance of Baptists and representing NCC's Governing Board; Alex Winnette, Unitarian Universalist Assn; others will be present for questions.
