Presbytery and synod news

by Jerry L. Van Marter Presbyterian News Service

OVERLAND PARK, KS - Presbyterian Children's Services within the Synod of Mid-America is partnering with Operation Breakthrough in Kansas City to provide a mentoring and family support program for at-risk school children. PC(USA) congregations in Kansas City have so far furnished five trained mentors for the program.

Kansas City's Central Presbyterian Church gave a $5,000 start-up grant for the program and hosted the initial training session.

According to Rich Maxwell, PCS' development director, said the vision is to establish the program in several locations in the synod. "Mentoring is a large part of the strategic plan and Presbyterians have a firsthand opportunity to witness and be involved in the breakthroughs."

SEATTLE - Seattle Presbytery has won an Outstanding Achievement in Congregation Video Production "ARBY" from the Academy of Religious Broadcasting Awards of Excellence for Signs of Hope, a video on the community ministries of Seattle's First Presbyterian Church.

The ARBYs, now in their 40th year, are given to honor "creative and sensitive programming that touches human, social or spiritual values." The video was made by White Noise Productions under the direction of the presbytery's Communications Ministry Team and its former communications director, Corey Schlosser-Hall.

The video features the New Life Community, El Buen Pastor Hispanic congregation, Street Youth Ministries, and Vine Maple Place - all outreach ministries of First church.

EAGAN, MN - Marcia Heyser, a parish nurse in the Synod of Lakes and Prairies, is assembling a synod-wide directory of parish nurses.

Heyser says the directory will enable parish nurses to stay in touch, share experiences and pass on information. To date, she has compiled a list of 29 parish nursed within the synod. For more information contact Heyser.

Information about the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)'s parish nursing program is available on the National Health Web site.

STILLWATER, OK - The Oct. 8-9 meeting of Cimarron Presbytery will explore the theme of personal and societal change. Four issues will be explored: how the Bible informs us about what God calls us to be and do; how to reclaim public civility and the role of the church in establishing and strengthening civility; ; how to reach out in mission to people who look different from us, with particular assessment on the subject of immigration; and how to become a covenant community in which envisioning leadership informs mission and ministry both as a presbytery and as congregations.

Guest speakers will include the Rev. Cynthia Rigby of Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary; Cassandra Dahnke and Tomas Spath of the Institute for Civility in Government in Houston; and Julia Thorne, the immigration attorney for the Office of the General Assembly in Louisville.

WATERLOO, IA - Bonnie Loomis, clerk of session of First Presbyterian Church of Greene, IA, in North Central Iowa Presbytery, is also known as the "Crazy Cookie Lady."

Loomis is the most active supporter of the church's Presbyterian Cookie Project, selling a cookie press of the seal of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). The press, authorized by the denomination and selling for $10, is ceramic with a terra cotta face.

Loomis actively sends out brochures, makes phone calls and continues to seek ways to promote the project. The "Crazy Cookie Lady" is a moniker given to her by her church and will soon find its way onto a tee-shirt. All proceeds from the sales of the presses and tee-shirts, after costs, are provided to mission projects chosen by the session of First church. For more information, contact Loomis by email; or the church by mail at Box 160, Greene, IA 50636, or by email.

PANORAMA CITY, CA - The Presbyteries of San Fernando and San Gabriel and the Synod of Southern California and Hawaii are sponsoring one-day seminars on "Sabbath Economics, Oct. 6 at St. Stephen Presbyterian Church in Chatsworth and Oct. 7 at All Saints Church in Pasadena.

The seminars will address how lifestyle and financial choices impact hunger, poverty and peace. They will be led by Ched Myers, a theologian and author of Binding the Strong Man and Who Will Roll Away the Stone? who teaches biblical literacy and social analysis; and the Rev. Andy Loving, an ordained minister and investment adviser who specializes in working with individuals and religious institutions who are trying to understand what it means to be a "responsible financial steward."

HASTINGS, NE - "Vital Vocations and Communities: Survival or Revival in Pastoral Ministry in the Post-modern World" is the theme of the annual Winter Pastors School sponsored by the Presbyteries of Central Nebraska, Homestead and Missouri River Valley.

The school, to be held on the campus of Hastings College, will feature the Rev. Victor L. Hunter, pastor of Evergreen (CO) Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and retreat director at A Mountain Retreat in Evergreen. He is also adjunct faculty at Phillips Theological Seminary in pastoral theology and ecclesiology.
