Helpful, hurtful or redundant?
Anglican Communion debates the wisdom of adopting a covenant

[Episcopal Life] The prospect of an Anglican covenant -- first proposed in the Windsor Report in 2004 -- is causing much debate in the worldwide Anglican Communion. Some find affirming principles of cooperation reassuring. Others insist that the loose federation of 38 autonomous provinces needs no such instrument.
"I think it would be good for us to have some sort of international, written, Anglican covenant or constitution," says the Rev. J. Robert Wright, professor of ecclesiastical history at General Theological Seminary in New York. An Anglican covenant could help to define what the terms of Anglican membership should be, he says.
The Anglican Primates released the first draft of the covenant during their February meeting in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, asking for comment from the communion's provinces by January 1, 2008.
