Full communion partners discuss Catholicity and Globalization, unite in mission

By staff

[Episcopal News Service] Members of the Church of Sweden, the Episcopal Church, the Iglesia Filipina Independiente (the Philippine Independent Church), and the Old Catholic Churches of the Union of Utrecht met for the second time around theme "Catholicity and Globalization: Being Catholic Churches in the Context of a Globalized World." The conference brought together these full communion partners November 12-16 at the new Desmond Tutu Center at the General Theological Seminary (GTS) in New York.

The group began on November 13 by reviewing the St. Martin's Statement -- written last year at Maassen near Utrecht -- with a response from Dr. Johan Hasselgren of the Church of Sweden (Lutheran), who came as an observer to the conference, and Fr. Eleuterio Revillido, a seminary dean from the Philippines. The Statement (released on the Feast of St. Martin of Tours in 2006) committed the group to work together "to understand about what it means to be catholic today, in the context of increasing globalization, technological interconnections, and the imbricated layers of many kinds of networks."

A major presentation, "Globalization as the Context for a Theological and Ethical Understanding of Catholicity," was made by Professor William Danaher from GTS and the response given by Dr. Franz Segbers of the Old Catholic Church in Germany.

Korean reunification needs churches' partnership, Grieves tells TOPIK peace conference

By Neva Rae Fox

[Episcopal News Service, Seoul] Working in partnership for reunification of Korea "would be a significant witness of Christ's reconciling love for all humanity" the Rev. Canon Brian Grieves, director of Peace and Justice Ministries, told the international Anglican conference, Towards Peace in Korea (TOPIK), during a November 19 panel discussion in Seoul.

In his opening remarks, Grieves underscored the "chance for our churches -- especially in Korea, Japan, China and the United States -- to work in partnership for such a goal."

Episcopalians and Anglicans from throughout the Anglican Communion have gathered for TOPIK, a six-day conference organized in response to a 2005 Anglican Consultative Council (ACC) resolution calling for peace, reconciliation and reunification of Korea.

In Seoul, Robertson preaches on the hope for peace

By Neva Rae Fox

[Episcopal News Service, Seoul] Preaching on the hope for peace at an international Anglican peace conference, the Rev. Canon Dr. Charles K. Robertson reflected on Psalm 79, repeatedly asking, "How Long, O Lord?"

Robertson, Canon to Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, is a member of the Episcopal Church delegation attending the Towards Peace In Korea (TOPIK) conference in Seoul, South Korea. He preached at TOPIK's November 19 morning Eucharist, celebrated by Jefferts Schori.

"In the past few days, we all -- Koreans and other nationals alike -- have heard of the deep hurts that have been experienced by Koreans in both the South and the North," he said, "The cry of the Psalmist has been echoed in many of the statistics and stories that we have heard shared here. War, division, crime, suicide, a profound sense of helplessness: For all too many, the world appears dark indeed."

Korea's Anglican Church shares Sunday services with TOPIK peace conference

By Neva Rae Fox

[Episcopal News Service, Seoul] Members of the Anglican Church of Korea (ACK) opened their hearts in peace and welcomed the international visitors attending the conference, Towards Peace in Korea (TOPIK), to their worship services on Sunday, November 18.

"The division between North and South Korea not only impacts politics, society and culture but it also seriously and adversely affects the integrity of our lives," ACK Presiding Bishop and Primate Francis Park said in his Gospel of Peace. "A bird needs two wings to fly, but if one wing is broken or damaged, the bird is unable to fly."

Park issued the Gospel of Peace to be read in all churches November 18 in honor of TOPIK, the Anglican conference gathered in Seoul to discuss peace and a unified Korea.

Church blogosphere: fresh air or rhetorical smog?

By Sean McConnell

[Episcopal Life] They're like monks of old, scribing texts on Scripture and theology, prayer and meditation, church governance and liturgics -- topics that resonate with them and their experiences of faith in the current day.

They're bloggers -- writers of Internet weblogs ("blogs," for short) -- whose readers respond with comments for posting online.

Together they populate the "blogosphere," a communication environment that, spiritually speaking, includes content that comes as fresh air to some and rhetorical smog to others.

On the road in China with the Presiding Bishop

By Neva Rae Fox

[Episcopal News Service] Visiting two of China's major cities, meeting with church leaders and seminarians, and learning about the world's most populated country were the first steps in Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori's nine-day journey in Asia.

Jefferts Schori traveled to Asia to lead an Episcopal Church delegation to the international Anglican peace conference, Towards Peace in Korea (TOPIK). Joining the Presiding Bishop were the Rev. Canon Brian Grieves, the Episcopal Church's director of Peace and Justice ministries; Peter Ng, partnership officer for Asia and the Pacific; and the Rev. Dr. Charles Robertson, Canon to the Presiding Bishop.

Before arriving in Seoul, the delegation spent November 12-13 in Shanghai and Nanjing -- a time highlighted by a visit with the legendary Bishop K. H. Ting.
