Nuevo Amanecer represents 'A New Dawn' for Hispanic and Latino ministries

>By Nan Ross

[Episcopal News Service] An Episcopal Church conference on Hispanic
and Latino ministry underway this week near Atlanta has gathered more
than 200 people from diverse Spanish-speaking communities in eight
countries to share in the challenges and blessings of their ministries
and chart a course for continued growth.

"A New Dawn -- Nuevo Amanecer -- Together We Grow and Are
Strengthened," represents the first time in six years that
Episcopalians engaged in Hispanic and Latino ministries have come
together. The entire program is offered in Spanish, with English
translation available throughout.

At the opening Eucharist June 30, Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts
Schori encouraged participants to examine "Why are we here? What is
our mission? What is our vocation as Christian brothers and sisters?"
And she reminded them, "Jesus' ministry belongs to all people who are
baptized, not just bishops and clergy."

>LAMBETH CONFERENCE

Australia's primate to be Lambeth bishops' spokesman

[ACNS] The Most Rev. Phillip Aspinall, archbishop of Brisbane and
primate of the Anglican Province of Australia, will act as principal
spokesman for the Anglican Communion bishops attending the 14th
Lambeth Conference which meets July 16-August 3 in Canterbury,
England.

Aspinall acted as spokesman for the primates at their meeting in Dar
es Salaam, Tanzania in February 2007. He will chair a daily press
conference during the Lambeth meeting at which he will be joined by
bishops with specialist experience in the theme of the day. The themes
to be covered by the bishops in their discussions range from climate
change and the Millennium Development Goals to Anglican identity and
the role of Covenant in the future of the Communion.

Aspinall said it will be both a privilege and a challenge to
articulate the voice of the bishops of the Communion at a time of
enormous challenge for the church and the world.

>SPIRITUAL REFLECTIONS

Eighth Sunday After Pentecost, Proper 9 - Year A [RCL]

Genesis 24:34-38, 42-49, 58-67; Psalm 45: 11-18; Romans 7:15-25a;
Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30

>By Debbie Royals

[Sermons That Work] "Come to me, all you that are weary and are
carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon
you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you
will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is
light."

Come to me, take my yoke, learn from me; I am gentle, humble in heart;
you will find rest for your souls.

Hearing these readings on a day when many are still engaged in
celebrating American Independence Day certainly brings to mind the
symbolic freedoms associated with the signing of the Declaration of
Independence. Along with these celebrations there is a time for rest.
It is a long weekend - three days of rest rather than the usual
two-day weekend. This weekend brings to mind picnics, fireworks, and
parades with patriotic overtones. Even though our country is made up
of a diverse mix of people, nations, cultures, and languages, these
readings and this holiday challenge us to engage in a full
understanding of power and a complete surrender to God. They challenge
us to question where our loyalties lie, but more importantly, we are
challenged to understand that sin sometimes comes from inaction as
surely as it comes from action. On this day we might even say that we
are being challenged to free ourselves from the sinfulness of the
world and to declare our lives in dependence to our God.

"The Epidemic: A Global History of AIDS" from HarperCollins
Publishers, by Jonathan Engel, 388 pages, hardcover, c. 2006, $28.95

[HarperCollins Publishers] From the Castro bath houses to AZT and the
denial of AIDS in South Africa, this sweeping look at AIDS covers the
epidemic from all angles and across the world. The story of AIDS is
one of the most compelling human dramas of our time, both in its
profound tragedy and in the extraordinary scientific efforts made in
order to find treatments and a cure. For gay Americans it has been the
story of the past generation, redefining the community and the
community's sexuality. For the third world, AIDS has created endless
devastation, with the worst yet to come; AIDS is expanding quickly
into India, Russia, China, and elsewhere while still raging in
sub-Saharan Africa. Writing with vivid immediacy, Engel allows us to
relive the short but tumultuous history of a modern scourge.
