General Seminary dean says school can withstand challenges

Discernment, fund-raising, staff cuts included in 'decisive action'

>By Mary Frances Schjonberg

[Episcopal News Service] In the wake of a number of changes in three
Episcopal Church-affiliated seminaries, the dean of the General
Theological Seminary (http://www.gts.edu)
has told that community that while the school faces "major financial and
programmatic challenges," they "are not insurmountable."

"The immediate future of General Seminary is not imperiled," the Very
Rev. Ward Ewing, GTS dean and president, wrote in a July 2 letter
(http://gts.edu/news_view.asp?langdisp=&id=200). "Decisive action,
however, is not simply called for but demanded."

Ewing said that during a May board meeting, GTS' trustees committed to a
three-year plan to address the challenges.

Strong ecumenical presence set for Lambeth Conference

[ACNS] A strong ecumenical presence is planned at the 2008 Lambeth
Conference, where Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams will welcome
more than 75 representatives from a wide variety of churches and
Christian communities.

Two of the principal speakers at the conference come from the ecumenical
world.

head of the Vatican's Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples,
and deeply involved in the mission work of the Roman Catholic Church.

American evangelical, the founding pastor of Cedar Ridge Community
Church, a prolific author, and an internationally recognized contributor

Women bishops approved by Church of England's General Synod

[Episcopal News Service] The Church of England's General Synod on July 7
approved a motion that supports the consecration of women as bishops and
affirmed that "special arrangements" should be made available for those
opposed to the move.

After a four-hour debate and 13 proposed amendments, two of which were
carried, the church's main legislative body approved the following
motion:

>That this Synod:

(a) affirm that the wish of its majority is for women to be admitted to
the episcopate;
(b) affirm its view that special arrangements be available, within the
existing structures of the Church of England, for those who as a matter
of theological conviction will not be able to receive the ministry of
women as bishops or priests;
(c) affirm that these should be contained in a statutory national code
of practice to which all concerned would be required to have regard; and

(d) instruct the legislative drafting group, in consultation with the
House of Bishops, to complete its work accordingly, including preparing
the first draft of a code of practice, so that the Business Committee
can include first consideration of the draft legislation in the agenda
for the February 2009 group of sessions.

"Christians at the Border: Immigration, the Church, and the Bible" from
Baker Publishing Group, by M. Daniel Carroll R., Foreword by Samuel
Rodriguez, Afterword by Ronald J. Sider, 174 pages, paperback, c. 2008,
$16.99

[Baker Publishing Group] Immigration is one of the hot-button political,
social, and economic issues facing the United States today, with
tremendous bearing on the future of the country. It is also a matter of
great ethical import and so requires thoughtful engagement on the part
of both individual Christians and churches. Yet it is an emotionally
heated and complex topic, one often informed more by ideological and
economic commitments than by biblical values.

Christians at the Border seeks to remedy that situation by drawing on
the ethical resources of both the Old and New Testaments to provide a
biblical perspective on the immigration debate. The author is of mixed
Hispanic and Anglo parentage and cultural experience, so he is uniquely
qualified to address the issue. He does so in a balanced, accessible,
and informative manner. Besides plumbing Scripture for insights, he
outlines a history of Hispanic immigration to the United States and
addresses a largely overlooked issue -- the impact that the large influx
of Hispanic immigrants is having and will continue to have on the
American church. Beyond its wide appeal, this book will prove a helpful
supplemental text in courses in ethics, contemporary culture and
Christian faith, and missiology.
