More than 80 people attended the 2008 conference of the Korean American
United Methodist Youth Initiative June 21-25 in San Diego for worship,
leadership training and fellowship.

In its eighth year, the event included participants from 15 churches in
nine states. The conference is supported through the United Methodist
Council on Korean American Ministries and local church donations.

Under the theme "The Kingdom Element," the gathering asked
Korean-American youths to look beyond the themes of previous years that
focused on developing individual faith, character and leadership.

Through worship, workshops and small groups, the participants explored
what God's kingdom looks like and their role in that kingdom.

The Rev. Tim Ellington, Chula Vista (Calif.) First United Methodist, led
the evening worship sessions and urged the youth to become "world
changers" who desire to bring about God's kingdom on earth.

Participants also attended sessions on topics including urban mission,
Methodism: then and now, kingdom worship and leadership training for
youth workers.

A strength of the Youth Initiative is the connections developed among
participants from all across the United States, including students,
college counselors, youth teachers and youth pastors. Often, they
discover they are experiencing similar struggles as they serve their
Korean-American churches.

IngaYouguy, a sixth-generation Korean Russian college student from
Kaliningrad, shared her testimony of the challenges and blessings of
being a Christian in Russia.

The event's leadership team encouraged participants to grow as
individuals and to experience God's kingdom beyond the doors of their
local churches.
