Episcopal educators to discuss economic challenges at biennial gathering
Community service is new component of conference
>By Lisa B. Hamilton
[Episcopal News Service] A difficult economic scene is on the minds of
Episcopal educators as they gather November 6-8 in Tampa, Florida for
the National Association of Episcopal Schools (NAES) biennial national
conference.
According to the Rev. Daniel R. Heischman, NAES executive director, the
effect of a possible recession on enrollment and budget tops the list of
challenges the teachers, chaplains, heads of school and directors of
early childhood programs bring. In an interview, Heischman said that a
workshop called "Marketing Your Episcopal School" has enrolled more
attendees than any other of the 59 workshop offerings. Sessions on
planned giving are also scheduled.
Economic challenges aside, Heischman said, "There is still a deep desire
to be fed with a spiritual focus on what we do." Accordingly, several
workshops are designed to enhance educators' inner lives, to deepen
understanding of education as a spiritual activity, to explore Episcopal
identity and to design outreach activities.

EPPN pledges to work with new administration to build a just world
>By Mary Frances Schjonberg
[Episcopal News Service] The Episcopal Church's Episcopal Public Policy
Network stands ready to work with Barack Obama and Joe Biden "to address
the issues before us while seeking to build a world in which God's dream
of justice is a reality."
That was the message November 6 from the network and the church's Office
of Government Relations.
EPPN's statement said that Obama's election "represents a significant
victory in our nation's long and continuing struggle to heal the wounds
of injustice and inequality in our common life." The just society
envisioned by the Baptismal Covenant "is not the one we see daily either
at home or aboard," EPPN said, adding that Obama and Biden "will have to
build on their message of hope and change, heal the wounds of a long and
fractious campaign, and work not only across the aisle, but across the
nation and the world for a better life for all of God's people."

>Another Bethlehem
Christmas Eve and a service that brought Christ child here
>By Dick Snyder
[Episcopal Life] I had attended the Christmas midnight mass at St.
Christopher's Church in Bluff, Utah. St. Christopher's was then, and is
now, part of the Episcopal Church in Navajoland.
The celebrant that evening was Steven Plummer, who served both as vicar
of St. Christopher's and as Bishop of Navajoland. He was the first
Navajo to serve as bishop in Navajoland.
The service that night was in both English and Navajo. There were many
in attendance whose native, and only, language was Navajo. And there was
one infant, who made his presence known by crying.

"A Gracious Rain: A Devotional Commentary on the Prayers of the Church
Year" from Church Publishing, Inc., by Richard H. Schmidt, 196 pages,
paperback, c. 2008, $16
[Church Publishing, Inc,] Using the collects (opening prayers) for each
Sunday and major feast day of the church year (including Christmas,
Epiphany, and the days of Holy Week and Easter Week), the author offers
a brief anecdotal meditation on the relationship of the prayers' and
seasons' theme to the realities of life. Beginning with the First Sunday
of Advent, he takes the reader on a journey through the church year as
he reflects on the mystery and challenge of our human pilgrimage.
