Episcopal Church of Haiti's 'gospel of wholeness' brings abundance to
poor country

>By Mary Frances Schjonberg

[Episcopal News Service, Port-au-Prince, Haiti] An image gallery
accompanying this article is available here.

The words on the blackboard in an open-air Port-au-Prince classroom
for disabled children summarize the Episcopal Church of Haiti's
(http://www.egliseepiscopaledhaiti.org) vision of ministry: "Blessed
assurance, Jesus is mine! O what a foretaste of glory divine."

Episcopalians in Haiti are using tools ranging from schools and
medical clinics to pigs and plows -- as well as financial resources
from elsewhere in the church -- to make that vision a reality. The
mixture makes for a long list of what Presiding Bishop Katharine
Jefferts Schori called "bold and creative initiatives."

During the Eucharist at the beginning of her November 15-19 pastoral
visit to the most-populous diocese of the Episcopal Church, Jefferts
Schori told an overflow congregation at Cathedralé Sainte Trinité
(Holy Trinity Cathedral) in Port-au-Prince that the diocese's work
requires "courageous and whole-hearted investment in something that
leads to more abundant life."

Alternative giving benefits adults, children worldwide

[Episcopal Life Holiday Gift Guide] Looking for a way to teach a
church school or youth group about Christ-like giving at Christmas?
Perhaps they'd like to emulate the children at Holy Comforter
Episcopal Church in Tallahassee, Fla., who decided earlier this year
to participate in Episcopal Relief and Development's "Gifts for Life."

Getting matching funds from two Holy Comforter parishioners, the
children collected enough to send three goats, a flock of chickens,
ducks, water purification supplies, and mosquito netting to families
in one of the countries served by ERD.

"By ordering Gifts for Life, Episcopalians help us take steps to
alleviate poverty across the globe. Even the smallest gifts can make a
huge difference for the millions of people who suffer from poverty,"
said Rob Radtke, president of ERD.

>'Novel' idea

A gift book can be a treasure enjoyed over time

>By Martha K. Baker

[Episcopal Life Holiday Gift Guide] A book for Christmas -- how novel!
Or nonfiction or biography. Really, it isn't novel at all. A book
truly is the gift that keeps on giving, but picking one can cause
"option shock."

The list below suggests gift books published in the last 18 months.
Hopefully, a title may connect with your sister or your godfather, or
a book may sound perfect for your boon companion -- on the conditions
that he lend it to you when he's done and that you can discuss it
together after you've finished it, too.

"The Heart of the World: An Introduction to Contemplative
Christianity" from the Crossroad Publishing Company, by Thomas
Keating, 98 pages, paperback, c. 2008, $14.95

[The Crossroad Publishing Company] The Christian heritage contains a
rich contemplative wisdom, literature, and practice, and this volume
is written for those who would like to find enrichment in spiritual
practices grounded in non-Christian religions while retaining basic
Christian commitments. Traditional Christian subjects such as
sacrifice, redemption, salvation, faith, and prayer are discussed to
foster understanding of their contemplative aspects. Explanations on
how practices such as Lectio Divina clear the mind of the hectic
nature of everyday life and help prepare the heart for profound
listening to the divine within are also included.
