Nan-Kan Presbyterian Church Holds Service on Taiwan’s Highest Peak

In preparation for celebrations commemorating its 120th anniversary on February 14th of next year, Nan-Kan Presbyterian Church in Hsin-Chu is hosting several events, including a mountain-climbing expedition to Taiwan’s highest peak, Jade Mountain. In a recent trip, church members held a worship service there by praying and declaring that God is Lord over Taiwan and its people.

This trip is also a first for Huang Hsin-Shiung, who pastors at Nan-Kan Church. Reflecting on this journey, he said, “I feel very happy. It’s very satisfying to stand on Taiwan’s highest peak. It’s also a big mission to lead members of my congregation up the mountain to worship God.” Pastor Huang recalls that it was about 5:45 a.m. when the group reached the peak of the mountain at the break of dawn. As the sun slowly crept up, the clouds and fog that covered the surrounding mountains slowly parted. The view was exhilarating. “Taiwan is truly beautiful,” he said.

Pastor Huang and church members were a bit apprehensive before embarking on this trip because they did not have much experience in mountain climbing. To prepare for it, they invited a church member who had mountain-climbing experience to share about previous experiences and offer tips. After the meeting, so many people signed up for the Jade Mountain trip that the church had to divide them into three separate groups to accommodate the number of participants.

Pastor Huang shares that he did not reach the peak of Jade Mountain on his first trip. Due to bad weather and safety precautions, he and 10 other members came near but did not reach the peak. However, 25 other people successfully made it to the top on the first trip. The second trip was cancelled due to a taiphoon. The church is planning its third trip next year, possibly around the time of its anniversary, so that members who were not able to pray for Taiwan and its people on Jade Mountain’s peak will get another chance to do so.
