CLINTON, SC ― More than 450 high school and middle
school-aged young people attended Presbyterian College's
[www.presby.edu] annual Church Youth Day on Saturday, Nov.
15. The young church members from presbyteries across South
Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida came to
Clinton for a day that featured the announcement of 41
nominees and one winner of the Presbyterian College
Outstanding Church Youth Leader award.
"Each of these Outstanding Church Youth Leaders already
offers significant leadership, passion, and service to
others in and through their churches and communities," said
Church Relations Director Jim Simpson. "As such, they are
already expressing the motto of PC, 'While we live, we
serve.'"
Elizabeth Eason from Summerville Presbyterian Church in
Summerville, SC was named the overall winner of the award.
A captain of her church basketball and Relay for Life
teams, Eason participates in Montreat Youth Conferences and
in Project Burning Bush at Union-PSCE in Richmond, VA.
Eason will receive an annual scholarship of $2,500 upon
enrolling at Presbyterian College.
ST. PETERSBURG, FL ― At a time when we need a new
generation of change agents to transform our country and
our world, we can look back at what it took in the 1960s to
transform how young people were prepared to be noble
citizens, community leaders, and moral, thoughtful, caring
men and women.
In a new book, On Solid Rock: The Founding Vision of
Florida Presbyterian / Eckerd College (Eckerd College,
2008, $25.00), Stephanie Kadel Taras, a 1989 graduate of
Eckerd College [www.eckerd.edu] and granddaughter of the
founding president, William H. Kadel, recounts the history
of one liberal arts college that demonstrates why our
society needs liberal arts colleges and the graduates they
produce.
"On Solid Rock is the story of how a few men fought for a
dream of a college like no other, and in the process fought
for justice," says Kadel Taras. "It is a story of a small
college in the 1960s and 1970s that also reveals the story
of our nation at that time."
The book is a history of a southern college born in the
civil rights movement that became a leader in integrating
higher education and college sports. It explains why Eckerd
College is located in the City of St. Petersburg and how
the college and the city have impacted each other over the
years.
MONTREAT, NC ― Montreat College [www.montreat.edu] will
hold its winter commencement Dec. 13 in Anderson Auditorium
on the college's campus.
The keynote address will be given by Ann K. Ashley, senior
vice-president of human resources for The Biltmore Company.
She has served on the college's board of trustees since
2006.
Student speaker for the School of Arts and Sciences will be
Caitlin Foreman Barker, who is graduating with a Bachelor
of Arts in Bible and religion. Student speaker for the
School of Professional and Adult Studies is Marcia Clement,
who has studied at the college's Asheville campus and will
receive a Bachelor of Business Administration.
CHARLOTTE, NC ― On Nov. 20, Johnson C. Smith University
[www.jcsu.edu] President Ronald L. Carter announced his
decision to implement a Global Initiative for the school.
This initiative serves as part of his vision to make sure
that JCSU students become "citizens of the world" while
immersing themselves in other international cultures. The
announcement included implementation of the Center for
Excellence in Global Education ― with a heavy emphasis on
fluency in foreign languages ― and a drawing for 12
all-expense paid trips for JCSU students to study abroad.
"A component of the global education is that students must
be able to appreciate and master foreign languages," Carter
said. "There are some things that students are not going to
understand about other cultures and world experiences if
they cannot speak the language. We want our students to be
able to do this with ease so that they are more marketable
once they graduate from JCSU."
