'Purpose-Driven' pastor offers space to dissident Episcopalians

>By Mary Frances Schjonberg

[Episcopal News Service] The Rev. Rick Warren, pastor of Lake Forest,
California-based Saddleback Church and a leading conservative
evangelical, has reportedly told a number of Anglican leaders that he
is willing to aid dissident Episcopalians in southern California.

"We stand in solidarity with them, and with all orthodox, evangelical
Anglicans. I offer the campus of Saddleback Church to any Anglican
congregation who need a place to meet, or if you want to plant a new
congregation in south Orange County," Warren reportedly wrote recently
in a letter.

Kristin Cole, an account executive with A. Larry Ross Communications,
which is based in Dallas, Texas and handles public relations for
Saddleback Church, told ENS that Warren sent the letter to "30 top
Anglican leaders" including many in the global south. The letter was
intended to be private, Cole said, and declined to release a copy of
the letter and a list of its recipients.

Brian Sellers-Petersen appointed director of church engagement programs for

>ERD

[Episcopal Relief and Development] Rob Radtke, president of Episcopal
Relief and Development (ERD), has appointed Brian Sellers-Petersen as
the relief agency's director of church engagement programs, effective
January 1.

>From his base in Seattle, Washington, Sellers-Petersen will be
responsible for developing church-based programming and overseeing ERD
initiatives with Episcopal congregations, dioceses, schools,
seminaries and organizations in the United States.

"As Episcopal Relief and Development shapes its next strategic plan,
it is abundantly clear that church engagement programs will be a
priority," said Radtke. "Accordingly, I have decided to move quickly
and appoint Brian to this critical position so that he can have a role
in shaping this important work."

>OPINION

>Civil discourse

>By Solange De Santis

[Episcopal Life] In the January issue of Episcopal Life, three
Christians express their opinions on certain courses of action
followers of the faith might take when there are serious
disagreements. In this case, the discord concerns desires to leave the
Episcopal denomination yet retain such physical property as land and
buildings.

Joan Gunderson writes that, while she has no particular love for the
courts, legal action is necessary to preserve Episcopal heritage that
spans the generations. Tim Safford writes that he believes
secessionist church members, allowed to leave with property,
eventually will return and reconcile. George Clifford says that the
focus should remain on God's love, even for the disaffected. (The
three columns will be published January 14-16 in the Opinion section
of Episcopal Life Online.)

While you, the reader, probably will disagree with one or more of
these opinions, they nevertheless represent legitimate, reasoned
viewpoints that have been aired many times at the local, diocesan,
national and international levels of this church. You may think them
brilliant or ridiculous, well-written or poorly reasoned, naïve or
sophisticated, holy or unchristian, heavy-handed or merciful, and you
are free to do so and to express your opinion through letters to the
editor, "reader response" on Episcopal Life Online or by submitting a
column for consideration.
