>PEOPLE

Rosenthal, Martin awarded Cross of St. Augustine for distinguished
service

>By Matthew Davies

[Episcopal News Service] The Rev. Canon James M. Rosenthal and Deirdre
Martin were each awarded the Cross of St. Augustine at a January 26
reception hosted by Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams in honor of
their combined 51 years of service to the Anglican Communion.

Both former staff members at the London-based Anglican Communion Office,
Rosenthal recently left his post as director of communications after 19
years and Martin resigned following a 32-year tenure, most recently
serving as executive assistant to the secretary general.

The Cross of St. Augustine, founded by former Archbishop of Canterbury
Michael Ramsey and first awarded in February 1965, is a circular silver
medallion presented to clergy and lay people for long-standing and
distinguished service to the Anglican Communion.

>OPINION

COMMENTARY: General Convention should focus on doctrine

>By Ian Chamberlin

[Episcopal Life] The theme of the upcoming General Convention in Anaheim
is expressed in the word "ubuntu," a word that was outside the
vocabulary of most Episcopalians until now. The meaning is something
like "I am because we are" and articles about convention talk about
new-fangled "emergent" worship, getting conversations in dioceses
started on "mission focuses," creative worship from different cultural
perspectives to include Chinese drums, and Korean drums, new liturgies
and all this and that. Well, frankly I have to say that I am troubled by
all this. It seems to be just one huge smorgasbord, sprawled out over a
convention center.

I think we have a lot more to worry about as a church than using
choosing between Vietnamese strings and African drums in our liturgy and
a lot more than "mission focuses," when I see a lack of focus on God.
"Smorgasbord" is an accurate representation of the current state of the
Episcopal Church - one huge mass of scattered people circling around the
newest worship fads, the newest doctrine fads, the newest "mission"
fads.

Although I am proud to be an Episcopalian/Anglican (though less so
Episcopalian on many days), I just find myself troubled over the
direction that the Episcopal Church is going. Although in some pockets
our numbers are growing, by and large, I think our numbers (along with
those of the wider "mainline Protestant" movement) are declining, albeit
at a slow leak.
