Toa Pen Teng (Tai Ping Ding) Presbyterian Church in Taichung presbytery recently passed a motion to change its name to Toa Pen Teng Joyce McMillan Memorial Church in memory of a great missionary. The move was met with approval and support from Joyce Children Home, an organization housing children with disabilities, which already has plans to partner with the church in some ministries.
Joyce McMillan is remembered as a missionary who devoted her life to medical ministries and evangelism in Central Taiwan after coming to Taiwan in 1960. During her early years in Taiwan, she served at Puli Christian Hospital. In 1962, she donated the land where the church now stands and also contributed financially to the church’s building project. She later helped the church by financially supporting its pastor until it was formally accepted as a member of Taichung presbytery. McMillan’s generosity is still fondly remembered by many church members at Toa Pen Teng Presbyterian Church.
According to church leaders, members who regularly attend services at Toa Pen Teng have declined to less than 10 people in recent years, prompting several churches in the area to seek support from various sources. After securing over $45,000 NTD in monthly financial support from local churches and organizations, Toa Pen Teng Presbyterian Church is now able to hire a full-time preacher and church membership is slowly increasing. “We believe that when we do our part, miracles will follow!” said a church member.
