‘Angel of Penghu’ Marjorie Bly remembered in film

Taiwan’s Christian broadcast station Good TV spent over one year visiting different locations in Taiwan, China, and US to film a documentary on the life of US Nurse Marjorie Bly and released a film on the first anniversary of her death on April 8th. The
documentary was shown at a performance hall in Penghu Island where many local officials gathered to view the documentary.
According to documentary producers, Taiwan was severely affected by Hansen’s disease (commonly known as leprosy) in the
1950s and was even reported to be the country with the most leprosy patients in the world. In addition, Penghu Island happened to
be the region most affected by this disease in Taiwan.
With the help of friends who served as her translators, Bly visited every home in Penghu Island, seeking out leprosy patients and
protecting them from mandatory isolation imposed by government authorities at the time. Because of her work in gathering patient
information and hiding patients so that they would not be cast away, local officials suspected she was a spy sent by the US
>government.
Tidbits about Bly’s life in Taiwan and her contributions to Taiwanese society that were once secret have now been made into a
documentary. In the film, people who knew her first-hand were interviewed on what they remembered the most about this amazing
missionary. The documentary will no doubt become another precious addition to Taiwanese church history.
Producers of the film hope the documentary will be shown on television, movie theaters, church gatherings, and art exhibits so that
churches across the country will be encouraged to get involved with missions and share the love of Christ with others.
