Churches in central Taiwan retrace journey of famous old evangelist

To remember the street evangelist who proclaimed the gospel in central Taiwan a hundred
years ago, many Presbyterian churches in central Taiwan are organizing bike tours across
Changhua and Taichung cities. Rev. Campbell N. Moody founded many churches in central
Taiwan nearly a century ago. Today, many members of those churches hope to retrace his
journey, learn more about Taiwan church history, and get a taste of the hardships involved in
preaching the gospel back in the days when technology wasn’t as advanced.
The bike tour began on May 30th at Liu-Yuan Presbyterian Church in Taichung city and
participants biked to the first church in central Taiwan, Da-She Presbyterian Church, where
they were treated to a detailed overview of the history of missions in central Taiwan.
Afterward, participants biked to Shen-Gang Presbyterian Church before returning to Liu-
>Yuan again.
More than 120 people participated in this event, ranging from kindergarteners to seniors in
their seventies. According to Taichung Presbytery Moderator Rev. Chen Bing-shiun, this
event not only helped many people get some exercise, it also allowed them to reflect on the
hardships many missionaries of the past faced while serving in Taiwan. Chen urged
everyone to emulate the love these missionaries had for Taiwan.
In Changhua Presbytery, a similar event was conducted on April 20th. Participants had a
service at the tomb where Mrs. Moody was buried and also toured several churches and
>organizations founded by Moody.
One participant who was a youth in senior high school commented that he had never heard
of Moody before but was very happy to know more about church history through biking. He
couldn’t imagine how missionaries of old were able to walk such distances just to spread
the gospel. Though he had read from history books about missionaries in Taiwan, these
accounts became more personal and powerful to him after having traced their journeys
personally and seen their legacy with his own eyes.
Churches and organizations across Changhua and Taichung will organize more events to
commemorate Moody throughout the rest of this year, including writing contests, choir
>performances, and joint-services.
