California appellate court rules La Crescenta property belongs to Los
Angeles diocese

Separate settlements mark July 1 return for Petaluma, Modesto
Episcopal congregations

>By Pat McCaughan

[Episcopal News Service] A California appellate court's June 9 ruling
was the latest in a series of recent developments that return disputed
church properties to three California Episcopal dioceses.

On June 9, the San Diego-based Fourth District Court of Appeal ruled
unanimously that the Diocese of Los Angeles is legal owner of property
currently occupied by St. Luke's Anglican Church. The congregation had
cited theological differences when severing ties to the Episcopal
Church (TEC) in 2006 and realigning with an Anglican diocese in
Uganda.

In unrelated agreements, displaced Episcopalians will return July 1 to
two other disputed properties, St. John's Church in Petaluma. in the
Diocese of Northern California and St. Paul's Church in Modesto in the
Diocese of San Joaquin.

>Episcopal camps nurture faith and friendships

>By Pat McCaughan

[Episcopal Life] It was the first full day at Camp Stevens at Julian,
California, for 31 sixthgraders, and every step along the hiking trail
brought fresh discoveries.

Camille Furby, 12, a first-time camper, was part of a group receiving
a mid-May mini-lesson on discerning dog prints from cat tracks. "I
like it. I'm learning a lot," said Furby, whose class curriculum
included spending a week at the camp about 60 miles north of San
Diego.

>From merely taking time out to stop, be still and listen to meadow
grasses shifting in the wind to contemplating varieties of energy,
recognizing poison oak or settling in amid charred oak and pine trees
for an impromptu fire safety lesson, "we want them to have this
experience," said Erin Brennan, a teacher at Furby's school, All
Hallows Academy.

>Awe and advocacy in a Tennessee forest

>By Phina Borgeson

[Episcopal News Service] When Congress acts to designate new National
Forest areas as wilderness, local economic, political and ecological
issues come into play. But what if spiritual values also influenced
advocacy and decision making? That is what a small group of
Episcopalians asked themselves as they set out on a wilderness retreat
held June 4 to 7 in the Upper Bald River Wilderness Study Area of the
Cherokee National Forest in southeast Tennessee, just south of Great
Smoky Mountains National Park.

>SPIRITUAL REFLECTIONS

June 14 - Second Sunday After Pentecost, Proper 6 - Year B

(RCL) 1 Samuel 15:34-16:13, Psalm 20, 2 Corinthians 5:6-17, Mark 4:26-34

>By the Rev. Dr. J. Barrington Bates

In today's gospel passage, Jesus speaks in parables - again. He does
that a lot. Jesus frequently uses this particular literary device to
get his point across. And in this passage from Mark's gospel, we hear
that Jesus preached only in parables, "as they were able to hear."
