Don’t let Tiananmen moms weep through the night!

This year’s June 4th coincides with the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square
massacre. On the evening of June 3rd, Taipei city legislator Jian Yu-yan and human
rights organizations gathered at Chi-Nan Church to urge Chinese officials to
honestly face the truth behind this tragedy, “Don’t let Tiananmen moms weep
through the night anymore!” they appealed to the Chinese government.
Those gathered to remember this tragedy also pleaded for the Chinese government
to come to terms with what happened and compensate the victims’ families. They
emphasized that besides speaking out for human rights in China, they were also
urging people to pray for the mothers of the victims and for the future of Taiwan.
According to reports, Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou used to write articles on the
Tiananmen Square massacre around this time every year, but has stopped doing
so ever since he took office. However, to support the victims’ mothers, human rights
groups in Taiwan must continue to express support publicly and urge the Chinese
>government to disclose the truth quickly.
As concerned citizens gathered around countless of candles aligned in the shape of
a “6” and a “4”, Taiwan Think Tank Director Lai I-chung read aloud a statement
commemorating the 20th anniversary of Tiananmen Square Massacre. The
statement urged the Chinese government to assume responsibility and
>compensate the victims’ families.
After reading the statement, the crowd observed a moment of silence before
signing the statement. Rev. Jeng Ying-er led participants in a prayer asking for
God’s blessing upon Chinese people so that they may one day enjoy democracy
and freedom, and peace and joy. Rev. Jeng also prayed that God would protect and
deliver Taiwan from present dangers so that it can always remain an independent
>country.
“Whenever we reach out to the victims of Tiananmen, we are also simultaneously
voicing our concern for the safety and happiness of future generations of
>Taiwanese,” Jeng said.
