Petitions begin for ECFA to be decided by national referendum

>Reported by Chen Yi-hsuan

To prevent the signing of an Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement

(ECFA) between Taiwan and China which would significantly threaten Taiwanese

people’s jobs and lives, opposition parties and social organizations in Taiwan

joined forces on June 18th to kick off a campaign to collect signatures for a petition

to make ECFA an issue decided by national referendum.

On June 19th, people in Tainan city lined up in Tainan Park and in Tainan City

Legislator Chen Tzung-yan’s office to sign the petition. Chen also happens to be a

member of Nanmen Presbyterian Church in Tainan city. The petition is garnering

enthusiastic support in many corners of the country.

According to Taiwan Nation Alliance, China is seeking to take over Taiwan through

ECFA and the Ma administration is bent on signing this agreement in an attempt to

cozy up to Beijing. Therefore, it is up to citizens to take initiative on this issue by

petitioning for ECFA to be an issue decided by popular vote in a national

>referendum.
