Presbyterian Church in Taiwan (PCT) leaders, including Moderator Leonard Lin,
Assembly Clerk Chiohh Lyiam-Syian, and Ecumenical & International Committee
Program Secretary Stephen Hsu, visited Reformed Church of America (RCA),
National Asian Presbyterian Council (NAPC), and Taiwanese Presbyterian
churches in Atlanta, New Jersey, and New York from June 9~21. The delegation
also attended a farewell ceremony for Rev. Wang Shun-Chi who will be retiring after
serving 20 years with the Presbyterian Church USA. Besides visiting churches, the
delegation also met with World United Formosans for Independence USA
>Chairman James Chen in Michigan.
According to reports, the delegation’s USA tour was jam-packed with visits to
partner churches, RCA general assembly and presbytery leaders, and more. PCT
Moderator Leonard Lin also took this opportunity to thank RCA for sending
missionaries such as David Alexander and Judith Estell to help Taiwanese
churches with mission work. He hoped future exchanges between pastors and
women groups from PCT and RCA would help churches learn from each other’s
>experiences.
NAPC held its annual conference on June 10~11 in Atlanta, Georgia. Since its
chairman, Rev. Hsieh Ching-hsiung, was formerly a member of PCT and also
attended the 54th PCT General Assembly Annual Conference in April on behalf of
NAPC, the PCT delegation was more than happy to visit NAPC’s annual
conference. The delegation also visited fellow Taiwanese there and shared about
>recent developments in Taiwan with them.
NAPC held a farewell ceremony during its conference to honor Rev. Wang Shun-
Chi who retired from Presbyterian Church USA last year after serving 20 years.
Wang served in Asian Congregational Enhancement ministries of the PCUSA from
1988 until 2008. His ministry involved reaching out to Asian immigrants in the U.S.
and the ministry was one of PCUSA’s ministries to minority groups. PCUSA’s
efforts in reaching out to minorities has been praised by many in the United States.
Lin thanked Wang for his efforts in facilitating closer collaborations between PCT
and PCUSA and between PCT and other Asian churches.
Lin also visited Taiwanese American Fellowship Presbyterian Church in New
Jersey on June 20th to take part in a seminar on Taiwanese issues. The seminar
drew over 100 people from more than 30 organizations. He then went on to New
York to preach and hold another seminar and exchange ideas with over 100
Taiwanese there about Taiwan’s current situation.
