Interfaith coalition applauds Obama commitment on immigration

>By Mary Frances Schjonberg

[Episcopal News Service] The Interfaith Immigration Coalition June 26
applauded what it called U.S. President Barack Obama's commitment to
"advancing the conversation on immigration reform."

The group, a partnership of faith-based organizations that includes
the Episcopal Church and is committed to enacting comprehensive
immigration reform this year, issued a statement the day after Obama
met with key U.S. lawmakers. He told the gathering that getting a bill
passed would "require some heavy lifting."

"It's going to require a victory of practicality and common sense and
good policy making over short-term politics," the Associated Press
quoted Obama as saying. "That's what I'm committed to doing as
president."

[Lambeth Palace] The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams, has
published a statement in support of Armed Forces Day, which is being

>MISSION

>Churches help prom dreams come true

>By Mary Frances Schjonberg

[Episcopal Life] Girls typically view their high school proms with an
equal measure of excitement and nervous anticipation. But for many
families, affording the cost of a frothy dress puts prom season beyond
reach.

Some Episcopal parishes help teens who otherwise would have trouble
affording a prom dress.

Presiding Bishop leads spiritual tour of Global Village

>By Martha Baker

>THE GOSPEL IN THE GLOBAL VILLAGE
>On the Road with Bishop Katharine
>By Katharine Jefferts Schori
>Morehouse Publishing, 184 pp., $20

In her latest book, Katharine Jefferts Schori serves as both Eleanor
and Franklin D. Roosevelt for us. Like FDR, she was elected our
president: that is, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. As such,
she has a mission, a focus. Like Eleanor, she is our eyes and ears,
going abroad and about when we can't, taking words and bringing back
gifts. She has compiled her words and gifts into a highly commendable
book, Gospel in the Global Village.

"Claiming the Earth as Common Ground - The Ecological Crisis through
the Lens of Faith" from Skylight Paths Publishing, by Andrea
Cohen-Kiener, director of the Interreligious Eco-Justice Network,
foreword by the Rev. Sally Bingham, 176 pages, paperback, c. 2009,
$16.99

[Skylight Paths Publishing] Our planet is in trouble, and it will take
an amazingly large and powerful force to shift into a more sustainable
way of living. Cohen-Kiener poses that people of faith have the
numbers, the passion, and the mandate to do it -- and that nothing
else is strong enough to counterbalance "business as usual."

Claiming Earth as Common Ground gathers insights from ecology
coalitions, emerging theologies, and spiritual and environmental
activists to rally and inspire people from diverse faith traditions to
live up to the challenge. Questions for discussion and action are
included to help individuals and groups focus on specifics they can do
that, collectively, have the power to save the planet. Contributors
include:

* The Rev. Woody Bartlett, founder of Georgia Interfaith Power and Light
* The Rev. Tom Carr, National Council of Churches Working Group on the
Environment
* The Rev. Donna Schaper, senior minister, Judson Memorial Church, New
York City
* Rabbi Andrea Cohen-Kiener, director of Interreligious Eco-Justice Network
* The Rev. Margaret Bullitt-Jonas, Religious Witness for the Earth
