Taiwanese Episcopalians assist with typhoon relief efforts

>By Matthew Davies

[Episcopal News Service] Episcopalians in the Diocese of Taiwan are
helping with relief efforts following the devastation of Typhoon
Morakot, which has claimed at least 67 lives and left more than 60
people missing on the East Asian island.

Bishop David Lai of Taiwan has confirmed that all church buildings,
clergy and members of the Episcopal diocese are safe after the typhoon
pummeled Taiwan and the coast of China August 8-9, causing the worst
flooding in half a century. Torrential rain has triggered mudslides
that have destroyed villages, roads and bridges.

About 30 members from St. Mark's Church, Ping Tung, and St. Timothy's
Church, Kaohsiung, have volunteered to help with the relief efforts,
mostly through a Christian charity organization of which the Episcopal
Church in Taiwan is a member. "Much of this work involves clearing
homes inundated with mud, and providing food and shelter to the many
people affected by the typhoon," Lai said in an August 12 letter to
partners and colleagues in the Episcopal Church.

[Episcopal News Service] Madison Avenue has long known that word of
mouth is the best advertising - a truth regularly played out on
Facebook, the popular online social networking site.

Brandon Mozingo, 32, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, became a fan of the
Episcopal Church on Facebook after noticing a friend became a fan. The
same with Ann Redmond, 54, of Tallahassee, Florida, a member of St.
John's Episcopal Church and a singer in the choir.

[Sermons That Work] Sometimes you have to wonder about after-church
snacks, especially celebrations. Eating congratulatory cake doesn't
make for a good pre-lunch appetizer, does it? Some parents oppose
having cookies available for their little ones and insist on fruit or
other more nutritious snacks. What's the hospitality committee to do?
