>PITTSBURGH: Diocese releases 135 clergy

[Diocese of Pittsburgh] The Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh said Nov. 3
that it had formally released 135 priests and deacons who have not been
active in the Episcopal Church since October 2008.

Provisional Bishop Kenneth L. Price Jr. wrote to each of the affected
clergy, which a diocesan news release said was its way of "making good
on its offer to release the individuals from their licensed ministry in
the Episcopal Church in a way that does not involve disciplinary
action."

>Haunted by love

All Saints acknowledges how relationships outlast death

>By Susan Palwick

[Episcopal News Service] One Halloween, long before I became consciously
Christian, I took a train from London to Edinburgh, Scotland. At
twilight, maybe 10 miles from our destination, the train passed through
fields lit by huge bonfires. It was an arresting and beautiful sight.

I later learned that the tradition of building bonfires on the evening
of Oct. 31 dates back to the ancient Celts, who believed that on this
evening the boundaries between our world and the next weaken. They built
fires to ward off dangerous spirits and welcome friendly ones.

"From Holidays to Holy Days - A Benedictine Walk through Advent" from
Church Publishing, Inc., by Albert Holtz, O.S.B., 127 pages, paperback,
c. 2008, $16

[Church Publishing, Inc.] Rather than criticizing trappings of the
holiday season, this book looks at them from the viewpoint of Christian
contemplation, once aptly described as "a long, loving look at the
real." The author, a Benedictine monk who lives in the center of
downtown Newark, New Jersey, invites the reader to join him on his daily
walks as he points out dozens of often-unnoticed connections between our
holidays and the spiritual meaning of Advent and Christmas. In a string
of colored lights, a crowd of shoppers, or the window of a toy store, he
uncovers such traditional Advent themes as watchful waiting, repentance,
and selfless love. On the bustling sidewalks, he introduces us to
Isaiah, John the Baptist, and Jesus himself, all speaking their ancient
Advent and Christmas messages of peace and hope and good will.
