>SPIRITUAL REFLECTIONS

November 8, 2009 - Twenty-Third Sunday After Pentecost, Proper 27 - Year B

(RCL) Ruth 3:1-5; 4:13-17 and Psalm 127 (Track 2: 1 Kings 17:8-16 and Psalm 146); Hebrews 9:24-28; Mark 12:38-44

>By the Very Rev. Anthony F.M. Clavier

No, this isn't a sermon about tithing, so you may take your hands off your wallets.

Our television screens bombard us with offers of deals. No doubt your spam contains similar offers. From time to time we read about elderly people who have been duped out of their funds by unscrupulous people offering deals. There are even crooks who recently played with peoples' health by offering spurious swine-flu remedies. So we build walls around our lives, taking care not to be "had."

"Come Thou Long-Expected Jesus - Advent and Christmas with Charles Wesley" from Church Publishing, Inc., by Paul Wesley Chilcote, 112 pages, paperback, c. 2007, $13

[Church Publishing, Inc.] Oxford's fabled streets echo with the names of such key figures in English history as Edmund Halley, John Wycliffe, and John and Charles Wesley. Of more recent times are those of C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, and the other members of the renowned literary circle to which they belonged, the Inklings.

What would it be like to walk this medieval city's narrow lanes in the company of such giants of Christian literature, to visit Magdalen College, where Lewis and Tolkien read aloud their works-in-progress to their friends, or the Eagle and Child pub, the Inklings' favorite gathering place?

The lavish photography of this book will introduce you to the fascinating world of the Inklings, matching their words to the places where these friends discussed -- and argued over -- theology, philosophy, ancient Norse myth, and Old Icelandic, while writing stories that were to become classics of the faith.

The Inklings of Oxford will deepen your knowledge of and appreciation for this unique set of personalities. The book also features a helpful map section for taking walking tours of Oxford University and its environs.
