Executive Council members call for special meeting on Uganda legislation

>By Mary Frances Schjonberg

[Episcopal News Service] A teleconference meeting of the Episcopal
Church's Executive Council will take place on Dec. 7 to discuss a
possible statement on Ugandan legislation that would imprison for life
or execute people who violate that country's anti-homosexuality laws.

Sixteen members of the council requested the meeting with a handwritten
petition that said a motion would be offered at the meeting "regarding
the urgent human rights situation in Uganda."

Bulletin inserts for Nov. 29 carry Presiding Bishop's message for World
AIDS Day

"December 1 each year is World AIDS Day, an occasion both to remember
the 25 million beloved children of God who have lost their lives to the
pandemic over the past three decades, and to rededicate ourselves to
building a future without AIDS," writes Presiding Bishop Katharine
Jefferts Schori in Episcopal Life Weekly bulletin inserts for Nov. 29.
Jefferts Schori reminds Episcopalians of the need for action and
advocacy so that the worldwide AIDS pandemic continues to be a priority
for the Church and for the United States.

Archbishop of Canterbury, Pope Benedict discuss 'shared will' for
Anglican-Roman Catholic relations

>By Matthew Davies

[Episcopal News Service] Pope Benedict XVI and Archbishop of Canterbury
Rowan Williams, during a Nov. 21 meeting at the Vatican, agreed to
greater collaboration and a shared commitment to deepening relations
between the Anglican Communion and the Roman Catholic Church.

The 20-minute meeting came two weeks after the Vatican's launch of an
Apostolic Constitution, a document that outlines provisions to accept
groups of former Anglicans who wish to enter into full communion with
the Roman Catholic Church. The constitution came as a surprise to many
Anglicans, including Williams, when its planned release was announced by
the Vatican in October.

In an interview with Vatican Radio following the Nov. 21 meeting,
Williams said that he expressed to the pope some of his concerns "about
the way the constitution had been handled and received because clearly
many Anglicans, myself included, felt that it put us in an awkward
position. I needed to express to the pope some of those concerns and I
think they were received in a very friendly spirit."

"Let Every Heart Prepare - Meditations for Advent and Christmas" from
Church Publishing, Inc., by Barbara Cawthorne Crafton, 90 pages,
paperback, c. 1998, $10

[Church Publishing, Inc.] For centuries the words and poetry of our
hymns have spoken deeply to us. Many people, in fact, find that what is
heard in poetry and music sinks deeper into the soul than does ordinary
prose. And so it is to the beautiful seasonal hymns that Barbara
Cawthorne Crafton turns for inspiration for daily meditations during the
great devotional seasons of the church year: Advent/Christmas, and Lent.
"I hope that you find yourself humming familiar tunes to yourself as you
read, and that this condition persists for the rest of the day," writes
Crafton. Those who have known the hymns forever as well as those who are
new to these verses will find them, and Crafton's meditations on faith,
prayer, forgiveness, healing and more, an excellent companion for these
important seasons of the year.
