NETV confirms exit from cable television; fights massive deficit
>Reported by Lin Yi-ying
>Written by Lydia Ma
With a deficit of over NT$140 million, the board of directors of PCT Mass Media Foundation
voted recently to impose furlough at New Eyes Television (NETV) from January 1 until
February 21, 2010. Furthermore, the network will no longer be running on cable television,
which will save NETV about NT$50 million per year. NETV has also confirmed that all of its
programs will cease to run on cable television by January 31 at the latest.
According to a prayer letter issued by NETV recently, the decision to give up cable television
was a difficult call to make. However, due to insufficient financial donations since it became a
television network in 2008 resulting in yearly deficits, NETV had accumulated a deficit
exceeding NT$140 million by the end of 2009. The only way to stop the deficit from growing
>was to pull out of cable television.
The prayer letter went on to admit that NETV had adopted inappropriate policies as well,
which contributed to the financial crisis and it hopes that there will be other opportunities to
return to cable television in the future when it has enough funding to do so.
In the future, Christians interested in watching NETV can still do so by going to the network’s
website (www.netv.org.tw) where they can view programs for free. NETV plans to continue its
broadcast ministry as it feels it’s important to continue sharing the gospel, training disciples,
>and witnessing for Christ.
The prayer letter urged churches to support NETV through financial donations and
encouraged pastors and churches to redirect their annual tithing toward supporting NETV to
>help the network get through this crisis.
NETV plans to revert back to internet television by February 22, 2010.
