Youth help others and experience transformation through outreach ministries

>Reported by Chen Wei-jian

On January 10, Taichung’s Chung-Hsiao Road Presbyterian Church youth showed their

concern for typhoon victims by holding a bazaar to raise funds to support a retreat designed

especially for typhoon victims living in the region of Chasan near Alishan Mountain. Through

the enthusiastic support and participation of church members, the bazaar raised more than

NT$110,000 in one day, exceeding everyone’s expectations. All the proceeds will go toward

covering retreat expenses and buying winter clothes and daily necessities for children from

>poor families.

According to the church’s youth pastor, Wang Hsin-te, this is the third or fourth year that church

youth have been involved in short-term missions with children as the main focus. Every year,

the church chooses a small, rural church in coastal areas or in the mountains where they can

send their teens to minister to kids. This year, victims of Typhoon Morakot living in Chasan

who desperately need assistance caught the church’s attention.

According to Wang, kids living in the city enjoy a good, material life but often feel dissatisfied.

Short-term missions can help them put things into perspective when they realize how many

kids in other parts of the world lack material resources and yet are able to live happily. Wang

said many church youth come back transformed and it shows in the way they treat people and

>things afterward.

Besides training youth, the bazaar also provided an opportunity for church members to get

involved in post-Morakot rebuilding efforts because though many cannot do much personally,

their financial donations can go a long way. Wang said he was surprised by the outpouring of

support as the church prepared for this bazaar. Some church members were moved by the

Holy Spirit to donate items produced by their own manufacturing companies.

The church’s youth fellowship will partner with a local school fellowship in organizing this camp

slated to run from January 31 to February 5, 2010.
