While on annual leave, PCT General Secretary Andrew Chang accepted an invitation from

Taiwanese Pen Society in greater New York area to speak to more than 200 Taiwanese

professionals residing in the US. Chang held two conferences there and was warmly received

>by hosts and listeners alike.

Chang’s tour of the US took place while he was on annual leave, December 25,

2009~January 6, 2010. He was invited by Taiwanese Pen Society mainly because of PCT’s

contributions to Taiwanese society, particularly in the areas of political and social activism.

The society was also impressed by PCT’s commendable efforts during Typhoon Morakot and

throughout recent post-Morakot reconstruction efforts.

Chang also received US$50,000 in donations from various Taiwanese organizations and

Taiwanese churches in the US as many wanted to contribute toward PCT post-Morakot

>reconstruction efforts.

All members from Taiwanese Pen Society are Taiwanese professionals residing in the US. Of

these 200 or so individuals, more than 100 are physicians. Other notable members include a

former World Bank advisor, several New York University professors and a former New York

>State Department of Health commissioner.

When Chang was invited to address these people, most of them being non-Christians, he

touched on disciplines such as spirituality and humanities.

After the conference, society members signed a statement questioning Ma administration’s

reckless haste in signing an ECFA agreement with China. It urged the government to secure a

free trade agreement with Japan and U.S. first before considering an ECFA agreement with

China so as to safeguard Taiwan’s economic and political sovereignty.
