Chi-Nan Presbyterian Church in Taipei has been formally recognized by the

government as a historical monument. The church’s building was built 113 years ago

when Taiwan was still a Japanese colony. It is not only rich in history, but also serves as

>a beacon for Christ in Taiwan’s capital.

Last year, the church applied for a city government subsidy to film a documentary about

the church’s gothic-style building, which will serve as a tourist guide and filming of the

documentary reportedly concluded in February. The purpose of this film is to allow

everyone who tours the church to understand the history and beauty behind the

>building’s design.

The church lost ownership of the building in 1945 when KMT gained control of Taiwan

and declared the building a public property. Though it formally regained ownership of

the building merely 5 years ago, it has always taken great pains to care for the building

by properly maintaining and renovating its precincts and preserving all historically

>significant artifacts.

According to the church’s pastor, Rev. Su Hui-Ying, the church has invested a lot of

time, money, and human effort in preserving and promoting this church by hiring

architects to renovate it and photographers to record its changes. It has also written

with great detail many stories about the church told by its members throughout the

>years.

The latest partnership with the city government is a new adventure for the church. It

hopes to use film to capture the building’s design and weave it with many stories that

occurred within the building. The underlying theme running through all of the stories is

faith in Providence in an ever-changing world.

According to the church, the film will be available in Chinese, English, and Japanese

subtitles. A Chinese-English brochure will also be accompany the film.
