Opposition party Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU) Chairman Huang Kun-huei visited
PCT
headquarter offices on March 4 to meet with PCT General Secretary Andrew
Chang. The
purpose of Huang’s visit was to seek PCT support in recent efforts by TSU and
DPP to force
>a referendum on the ECFA issue.
According to the General Secretary, PCT will certainly support every event or
issue protecting
and promoting Taiwan’s autonomy because it is one of the means PCT churches
live out their
statement of faith. He also added that a referendum would make the will of the
people clear to
a government that seems deaf and uncaring to Taiwanese people’s concerns.
Recent chain of
events indicates it is imperative that PCT stand up and speak up for the
people of Taiwan.
Huang spoke frankly that TSU had decided to visit PCT soon after it took hold
of this initiative
because PCT is widely known as one of the fiercest protectors of Taiwan
throughout history.
PCT’s efforts have garnered public trust, praise, and admiration, and are the
reasons why
>TSU is now seeking support from PCT.
Huang also expressed his hope that PCT and TSU could become co-sponsors of this
initiative and Rev. Chang replied the matter would be reported immediately to
PCT General
Assembly Executive Committee for a vote. For his part, Rev. Chang said he
believed that
calling a referendum on ECFA was very important and PCT should support this
initiative.
As of March 9, PCT General Assembly Executive Committee has already passed a
motion
supporting PCT in becoming a co-sponsor of this anti-ECFA initiative.
