On March 27, many people around the world switched off lights for  an hour in a 
concerted

effort to raise awareness for environmentalism. In Taiwan, Society  of 
Wilderness Foundation

(SOW) and 700 supporters convened just outside of Taipei 101 on  that night to 
mark the start

of a series of events that will take place from now until April  22, also known 
as Earth Day.

Other cities around Taiwan also observed this hour, also known as  Earth Hour, 
as part of a

global movement encouraging individuals to turn off non-essential  lights and 
electrical

appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to  take action on 
climate

>change.

Quite a few churches in Taiwan took part in this event too in  various cities 
across the country,

including New Life Church in Taipei. According to the  church’s pastor, Rev. 
Hong Li-huei,

churches should participate in this event because they must teach  their 
members to be

environmentally-friendly before they can expect them to get  involved in 
environmental and

>social issues.

Besides participating in Earth Hour, New Life Church held another  similar 
event two days later

on March 29 in conjunction with 15 universities in greater Taipei  area.
