Taichung Presbytery hosts “Romantic Spring Encounter”
>Reported by Chen Wei-chien
>Written by Lydia Ma
On March 27, Taichung Presbytery women’s committee organized a “Romantic Spring
Encounter” for single young adults. Held at Liuyuan Presbyterian Church, this
event attracted 25
men and 29 women. Though it didn’t exclude non-Christians, participants were
still required to
name a Christian friend as his or her reference.
This gathering or group blind date included a short presentation by Rev. Chen
Sheng-shian, a
do-it-yourself chocolate workshop, and some group activities and games. Since
the program
was filled with fun group activities, it diffused any awkwardness participants
might have felt
>otherwise.
According to event coordinator, Wu Mei-ying, this was her first time
organizing such an event
and she was initially worried that there might be too many ladies and too few
men at this event.
After asking for help from fellow coworkers and spending a lot of time
praying, Wu reported a
small miracle – more men than women registered for this event at one point.
In the end, the number of men and women registered was almost even, enabling
Wu to divide
participants into small groups according to age and yet have almost equal
numbers of men and
women in each small group. Unlike other similar events held in the past by
other churches,
“Romantic Spring Encounter” had almost an equal number of participants from
both sexes.
To help these young men and women stay in touch after their initial encounter,
participants were
asked to write down the names of four people they would like to get to know
better and hand in
the list at the end of the meeting. Wu and her co-workers hope to contact
these people’s
respective churches and create opportunities for them to meet again in the
near future.
To encourage participants to take initiative and follow up, they were invited
to come forward and
get free movie tickets and free park tickets for a boating excursion in
Taichung Park. It was
reported later that one couple made good use of those tickets that very day by
going out
>together.
