CWM members share experiences at roundtable conference in Taiwan

To support mission and ministries within its member churches, Council for
World Mission
(CWM) organizes a roundtable conference every year and every member church
takes turns
hosting the conference. The conference allows CWM to get first hand updates on
its
members’ ministries and helps it determine how to allocate financial support
to every church.
This year’s conference was held in Taiwan.
CWM currently has 6 member churches from East Asia region from places such as
Myanmar,
Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and South Korea. Delegates from
churches in
these areas and CWM leaders held “2010 CWM East Asia Region Roundtable
Meeting” at
PCT Bible College in Hsinchu from April 23-30.
One by one, church leaders shared with each other what they’d been able to
accomplish with
funding from CWM. Delegates from Singapore, Myanmar, and South Korea shared
about
ministries they’d begun with the elderly and the poor with the help of CWM and
their vision for
>these ministries.
A delegate from Gereja Presbyterian Malaysia shared that recent policies
enacted by the
Malaysian government favoring native Malaysians had prompted many Chinese
Christians to
emigrate and had decreased the number of Christians available to serve in
church ministries.
Hence, churches in Malaysia desperately need support from churches in other
countries to
>train its youth, deacons, and elders.
According to reports, PCT receives nearly NT$5 million every year from CWM in
financial
support. These funds are used toward publishing “Reading the Bible with New
Eyes” (a
devotional booklet), training members in rescue and relief operations, and
supporting
>education ministries.
In contrast to previous years, CWM delegates got to see some ministries
first-hand this year.
They boarded a bus that took them to Ali Mountain (Alishan) in central Taiwan
to visit Tsou
District’s Chashan Presbyterian Church. Once there, they saw post-Morakot
reconstruction
efforts spearheaded by PCT in the past few months.
According to PCT Associate General Secretary Lyim Hong-tiong, he had suggested
during
last year’s CWM East Asia region roundtable meeting that delegates tour a few
places during
future conferences to see one another’s ministries first-hand. He thought such
experiences
would help delegates gain exposure and learn more from each other. Lyim’s
suggestion was
welcomed by other CWM members and paved the way for this year’s trip to
Chashan Church.
During the trip, Rev. Lyim and PCT Ecumenical & International Committee
Secretary Hu
Hong-chi shared with CWM delegates about PCT’s work and involvement in
post-Morakot
reconstruction efforts. After visiting Chashan Church, delegates were divided
into two groups
and engaged in a lively discussion on what they’d seen. They were very
impressed by the
scope and effectiveness of PCT relief efforts.
