One of Dr. David Landsborough Jr.’s famous sayings was that everybody had roots
somewhere, and his were in Taiwan. These words were engraved on a memorial
stone and
set on Changhua Christian Hospital’s David Landsborough, Jr. Memorial Plaza.
But more importantly, these words will always be written and treasured in the
hearts of many
Taiwanese people impacted by the Landsborough family.
On May 1, Changhua Christian Hospital (CCH) held a memorial service in honor
of its
honorary superintendent, Dr. David Landsborough, IV. The Landsborough family
had traveled
to Taiwan from the United Kingdom to attend this ceremony.
Dr. Landsborough’s eldest son, Donald Landsborough, spoke on behalf of his
family during
the service. PCT General Assembly Moderator Lai Hsien-chang delivered the
sermon.
The service also included a short clip made by CCH about the life and legacy
of Dr.
Landsborough and it drew laughter and tears from viewers.
Rev. C.M. Kao, former General Secretary of PCT, shared that when he was
imprisoned 30
years ago because of his involvement in the Kaohsiung Incident, he wrote a
will instructing his
family to donate his body to CCH for research purposes in case he didn’t
survive.
“I was influenced by my father, who was a student of Dr. David Landsborough,
Sr. I have more
than 10 relatives who are doctors and 5 relatives who are pastors – that’s how
much the
Landsborough family has impacted my family,” he said.
After the service, CCH held a ceremony to unveil a new memorial stone at the
recently
renovated David Landsborough, Jr. Memorial Plaza just outside of the hospital.
A few distinguished guests, including the family of Dr. Landsborough, PCT
General Assembly
Moderator Lai Hsien-chang, PCT General Secretary Andrew Chang, RCA missionary
Rev.
David Alexander, and CCH Superintendent Guo Shou-ren, unveiled the new
memorial stone
>together.
According to Guo, the two Dr. Landsboroughs have left a lasting legacy on CCH,
which
continues to place missions at the center of its core values. For CCH,
medicine is merely a
>means to share the gospel.
Guo pointed to the land where the memorial plaza now stands and said it was
formerly a
deserted kindergarten, but CCH chose to build a mission center on that plot of
land and use it
to equip more than 6,000 employees working in CCH-system hospitals to become
Christ’s
>ambassadors.
“We must learn from the Landsborough family and their spirit of service
spanning two
generations. Their vision was shared by two couples for as long as 70 years.
We must go and
>proclaim the gospel!” said Guo.
He confidently added that CCH is ready to embark on this trail set down by its
founders and
go to places in need of help through medical missions, including countries in
far away Africa
>and Central America.
