YMCA, PCT presbytery organize kids camp for young Morakot victims

In the months since Typhoon Morakot, Changhua Presbytery has remained in close
contact
with Rukai Presbytery, which suffered tremendous losses during Typhoon Morakot.
Recently, some youth from Changhua Presbytery led a weekend children’s camp to
reach out
to kids from Rukai Presbytery. They plan to hold 5 events between April and
November 2010
>to encourage and get to know these kids.
On May 15, 8 youth from different churches in Changhua Presbytery led a
weekend children’s
camp organized by YMCA leaders and local pastors. This is the second time
they’ve
participated in an outreach event for Rukai children.
According to YMCA Changhua branch General Secretary Chen Chi-chih, he visited
Rukai
Presbytery and Aborigine reservations soon after Typhoon Morakot. At first, he
didn’t quite
know how he could help. But when he saw children running around unattended
because their
parents were busy cleaning up, he began talking and playing games with these
children and
>soon got to know them.
After this experience, he figured that if he were to reach out and minister to
these children, it
had to be a long-term ministry. Hence, he began to learn their language and
organize various
events and also pulled together all available resources from Changhua’s YMCA.
Youth who participated in this weekend camp were all college and high-school
students.
According to Chen, they were mature, proactive and passionate. Not only did
they quickly
befriend Rukai children, they also chose to sleep in a church sanctuary to
spare their hosts
>from the hassle of housing them overnight.
