Lambeth Palace tells presiding bishop not to wear symbol of office

Jefferts Schori carries mitre during recent visit to Southwark Cathedral

>By Mary Frances Schjonberg

[Episcopal News Service -- Linthicum Heights, Maryland] When Presiding
Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori preached and presided at a Eucharist
June 13 at Southwark Cathedral in London, she carried her mitre, or
bishop's hat, rather than wear it.

She did so in order to comply with a "statement" from Lambeth Palace,
the London home of Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, that said
"that I was not to wear a mitre at Southwark Cathedral," Jefferts
Schori told the Executive Council June 16 on the first day of its
three-day meeting here.

Protestants, Evangelicals and Catholics form atypical alliance on
immigration reform

>By Lynette Wilson

[Episcopal News Service -- Washington, D.C.] The unusual alliance
among Evangelicals, Catholics and Protestants pushing Congress and the
Obama administration for comprehensive immigration reform has
social-science researchers scratching their heads.

"The cause of immigration reform has given rise to one of the broadest
alliances of religious groups ever assembled in our history - it cuts
across left and right, it cuts across denominations and traditions, it
cuts across theological orientations, said E.J. Dionne Jr., a senior
fellow at the Brookings Institution, a nonprofit think tank.

Presiding bishop speaks at prayer breakfast on Capitol Hill

>By Lynette Wilson, June 15, 2010

[Episcopal News Service - Washington, D.C.] Presiding Bishop Katharine
Jefferts Schori June 15 reminded more than 80 people gathered at the
Russell Senate Office Building here for a prayer breakfast that the
Episcopal Church's call for a "just and secure two-state solution" for
Israel and Palestine dates back to 1973 and the Yom Kippur War.

"Through our General Convention and Executive Council we have more
than 30 times repeated our belief that a two-state solution is the
only viable avenue to a just peace," she said.

June 27 bulletin inserts continue story of 'resurrected church' in Haiti

[Episcopal News Service] "We are a resurrected church," Bishop of
Haiti Jean Zaché Duracin tells other Episcopalians in ENS Weekly
bulletin inserts for June 27. The inserts report on progress that the
Diocese of Haiti is making towards establishing a master plan for
rebuilding its facilities, most of which were damaged or destroyed in
the Jan. 12 earthquake that also devastated much of Haiti's
infrastructure and its already-precarious economy. Duracin also speaks
of a renewed sense of ministry and vision among his people as they
work to overcome the devastation.

>SPIRITUAL REFLECTIONS

June 20, 2010 - Fourth Sunday After Pentecost, Proper 7 - Year C

>By the Rev. James Liggett

(RCL) 1 Kings 19:1-4, (5-7), 8-15a and Psalm 42 and 43 (Track 2:
Isaiah 65:1-9 and Psalm 22:18-27); Galatians 3:23-29; Luke 8:26-39

[Sermons That Work] Let's look for a minute at the story of the
Gerasene demoniac; it's about time somebody did. The story doesn't get
a lot of attention in preaching these days, and that's a shame.
There's some really good stuff here, and it's pretty funny if you come
at it from the right angle. Also, it's very handy to have it coupled
with Paul's words in Galatians. The two readings help each other.

First of all, let's look at the issue that seems to get in the way of
engaging it the most these last few centuries - those poor doomed
demons. The fact is, the New Testament world had a different way of
seeing reality than we do, or than the 10th century did, or than the
17th century did. And I'm confident that in just a handful of decades
there will be a still different way of seeing the world - different
categories, different ways of naming and organizing the stuff we
experience. And so on. That changing never changes.

>EBAR PICK

"Tudor City" musical CD by New York Polyphony, 17 tracks, $19.95.

[New York Polyphony] Classical vocal quartet New York Polyphony struck
a chord with their 2007 Avie debut, I Sing the Birth. For their second
release, the all-male foursome delivers their signature fusion of
historically informed performances in a range of styles. The disc
explores the sacred music of the Tudor England. Integrated among
masterpieces by Tye, Taverner and Tallis, four new works by
British-Norwegian composer Andrew Smith add modern harmonic richness
and complexity. The result is a compelling synthesis of ancient and
contemporary vocal music.
