Church in Tainan bids farewell to old building with fond memories

Tung-Kuang Presbyterian Church in Tainan City held a thanksgiving service on
June 20, 2010

just before the church building was scheduled to be torn down and rebuilt.
During the service,

children’s drawings and old photos of the church covered the walls of the
sanctuary.

Tung-Kuang was founded during PCT’s “Doubling Movement” decades ago and the
church is

celebrating its 49th anniversary. However, last year’s Typhoon Morakot damaged
the church’s

roof and flooded the building with more than a foot of water.

After repairs proved too difficult, and in view of a growing congregation that
was exceeding

the building’s capacity, church leaders and members voted to rebuild and
expand the church building.

The old church building will be torn down at the end of August and the new
church building,

complete with 5 floors, will be completed in 295 days. In the meantime, the
church will rent a

nearby community center to hold services and meetings.

Tung-Kuang Church’s pastor, Rev. Hong Wen-jou, mentioned during his sermon
that the

church had already gone through 7 years 7 times, and 2011 would actually be
the church’s

50th anniversary, or “year of jubilee”. Having a new church building for such
an occasion would be a wonderful thing.

As the congregation looked at old pictures and relished on fond memories, Hong
hoped the

church’s future glory would surpass its present glory and that it would become
a good model

for its surrounding communities and a place blessed and dwelt by God.
