Aborigine college ministry tackles hot issues at exciting summer camp

With the start of summer vacations finally here, a lot of summer camps are
sprouting across

the nation. Aborigine college students are spending this summer exploring
important issues

relevant to their lives and faith. They’re also taking time to visit Aborigine
reservations in

Nantou to get a grasp of challenges facing Aborigines who live in remote
reservations.

A youth camp was held at Central Bunun Presbytery’s Kalibuan Church from July
1~4, 2010,

co-sponsored by PCT Campus Ministry Committee and Indigenous Ministry
Committee. More

than 80 college-age Aborigine youth attended this camp.

According to Campus Ministry Committee Secretary Rev. Tan Ho-Tek, this year’s
camp

focused on the book of Romans and its application to everyday life. Speakers
sought to

increase biblical literacy among youth and generate discussion on a few hot
issues. They

hoped that college youth would learn to reason clearly on important hot issues
of the times,

>such as sex.

“Our hope is to get away from dogmatic approaches when training our youth
because that’ll

only make church more repulsive to them,” said one pastor. He added that since
sex is a gift

from God that must be handled with care, it’s imperative to teach youth about
their relationship

with God and tackle problems with biblical perspectives.
