City kids experience Aborigine life, learn life lessons at reservations

This summer, Liu-Yuan Presbyterian Church in Taichung helped its children
overcome cultural
barriers by taking them to Aborigine reservations to experience Aborigine
culture and life in
the mountains. Children on this camping trip also learned how to live together
and receive love from others.
The camp took place from July 5~10 at Liu-Yuan Church and Atayal Presbytery’s
Knazi
Church. Participating students ranged from kindergarteners to students in
their first year of
junior high school. They were divided into two groups after spending 3 days at
Liu-Yuan Church.
According to camp coordinator Elder Cho Meng-you, the purpose of this summer
camp was
to break down children’s stereotypes about life in Aborigine reservations. The
camp included
activities such as hunting, farming, and Aborigine arts and crafts.
To make the experience more authentic, Knazi Church had even given unique
Aborigine
names to every child taking part in the camp. Church staff explained the
meaning of each
name to the children after they arrived to the reservation.
Cho added that besides experiencing life as an Aborigine far away from cities,
children also
received lots of love and attention from gracious hosts. He had hoped that
such an encounter
would open their hearts to receive the gospel because a few children were new
and weren’t Christians yet.
Two kids who weren’t Christians and attended this camp were indeed touched by
this
experience and expressed their desire to be baptized. The church has since
invited them to
join its weekend day camp and the kids’ parents have also become interested
and positively
>inclined toward church.
