"Our annual pet blessing is one of our favorite and most
heartwarming
community events. Our furry, finned and feathered family members are
such a
special part of our lives." â The Rev. Christopher McNeill, pastor
of St.
John's on the Lake United Methodist Church in Miami Beach, Fla.

'Yappy Hour' at church draws people and pets

TACOMA, Wash. (UMNS) â Siesta the sloth made history recently at
First
United Methodist Church in Tacoma, Wash. For the first time, the
visitor
from the local zoo participated in the church's annual blessing of
the
animals. First United Methodist Church is one of many
congregations that
attract people by welcoming their two-, four- and no-legged
friends.

United Methodists aim to lift HIV/AIDS stigma

DALLAS (UMNS) â Activists, advocates and theologians, including
those who
are HIV positive, were among the 172 participants at "Lighten the
Burden
III: Working Toward an AIDS Free World." The Oct. 14-16
conference,
sponsored by The United Methodist Church's Global AIDS Fund
Committee,
focused on awareness, training and advocacy.

Upper Room supplies needed books

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (UMNS) â Africa Upper Room Ministries
provides
thousands of books to libraries at churches and seminaries
throughout
Southern Africa each year. The books are intended to help the
spiritual
journeys of Christians who typically lack quality reading
materials. So far
this year, more than 30 libraries have requested the books, which
are
provided at no cost by Africa Upper Room Ministries, the
publishing arm in
Africa of The Upper Room, a division of the United Methodist
Board of
   Discipleship.

"The word 'library,' of course, conjures up pictures of buildings
with racks
and librarians and 'silence' notices," said Roland Rink, Africa
Upper Room
Ministries administrator and a native South African. "A library
here could
be a little shelf of books in some sort of strategic place within
a church
   sanctuary."
