"God is the one who presides over the destinies of nations." â
United
Methodist Bishop Benjamin Boni, praying before the presidential
election in
                               Côte d'Ivoire

Pastor's trip provides shoes for students

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) â In a country where a president's wife
famously
owned 2,700 pairs of shoes, some Filipino seminary students have
only a
well-worn pair of flip-flops. But the Rev. MarLu Primero Scott
aimed to
change that. Having 17 student pastors from Union Theological
Seminary trace
their feet on paper and sign them with prayers, she came to the
U.S. to get
those prayers answered. And she is returning with 17 brand-new
pairs of
   shoes.

Mission site reaches hundreds of thousands

NEW YORK (UMNS)-10-Fold accomplished its purpose more than
40,000-fold. The
innovative online site attracted more than 417,000 people from 92
countries
during a recent 10-day period featuring live webcasts about United
Methodist
mission projects throughout the world. People could help just by
clicking
the link of a particular project and becoming advocates. For each
click,
various church groups donated one dollar to the selected project,
up to
$10,000. More than 43,000 advocates were counted. An additional
$30,000 was
raised online for projects related to 10-Fold.

Ivorians hope, pray for peaceful vote

ABIDJAN, Côte d'Ivoire (UMNS) â The United Methodist Church did
its part -
on bended knees - to ensure a peaceful vote Oct. 31 in the
country's first
presidential election since civil war divided the nation. The day
after,
church members joined with many others inside and outside the West
African
nation in hope and prayer as election workers counted ballots from
20,000
polling stations. There is a greater overseer, Bishop Benjamin
Boni reminded
the United Methodist faithful. "God is the one who presides over
the
destinies of nations," he said in special prayers before the
election.

WCC condemns attack on church in Iraq

GENEVA, Switzerland (UMNS) â The World Council of Churches has
condemned the
"criminal act of terror" Oct. 31 in Baghdad, Iraq, when gunmen
took hostages
in the Sayidat al-Nejat church. The death toll from the hostage
standoff
rose to some 58 people on Nov. 1, including priests, women and
children and
Iraqi security forces who conducted a raid to end the siege.

"The fellowship of the [20]World Council of Churches is deeply
troubled by
the continuous suffering of Christians in Iraq and continues to
stand in
solidarity with all churches as they pass through turbulent and
challenging
times and witness to the love and peace of God in Jesus Christ
even amidst
hatred and aggression," said the Rev. Olav Fykse Tveit, the WCC's
top
executive. "All those responsible need to be brought to justice,
and
governmental authorities should take their responsibility to bring
safety
and security to all citizens and particularly to those in
vulnerable
   situations."

Ecumenical leaders hold pre-election meeting with Obama

WASHINGTON (UMNS) â On the eve of the mid-term election and in
celebration
of 100 years of U.S. Christian cooperation across denominational
lines,
prominent church leaders met with President Obama to speak for the
millions
of Americans struggling to find jobs, make their next rent or
mortgage
payment, and put food on the table.

During the Nov. 1 meeting, leaders with both the National Council
of
Churches and the global humanitarian agency Church World Service
thanked the
president for passage of historic health reform legislation and
robust
engagement with the faith community, while also pressing him to
take a
strong stance on behalf of families facing poverty and hunger.
United
Methodists in the delegation were the Rev. John McCullough of
Church World
Service and Bishop Sharon Zimmerman Rader, the denomination's
ecumenical
officer. Read the full story [21]here.
